Waitress/bartender/cleaner available in Helsinki

Post by crimsonhope » Mon Aug 05, 2013 4:00 pm

Hei!
My name is Elisa, I’m 33 years old and Italian. I moved to Finland 2 months ago.
I'm looking for a job as waitress, bartender or dish washer. I can start immediately, whether full-time or part-time, preferably long-term but not mandatory. I’m also available for cleanings.
I speak Italian, English, a bit of Spanish and a bit of French. I don’t speak Finnish yet, but I’m waiting for attending a course in September.
I’ve had a lot of experience in the catering field and I have a catering-operator diploma.

Realistically, it will take you 3-5 years until you will speak Finnish well enough for having any chance of getting a job as waitress or bartender.

Regarding working as dish washer or cleaner, the economic crisis caused by the people in Southern Europe is also causing higher unemployment here, and there is much competition for this kind of jobs.

Thanks, I know a lot of foreigners who have job in Finland without speaking Finnish. Reallistically, everybody told me it will take 1-2 years to be able to speak Finnish well enough to get a job. Thank you, anyway.

But not as waitress or bartender.

And you mostly meet the ones who were lucky enough to find a job in Finland that allowed them to stay in Finland - during the years I also met many people who came to Finland looking for a job, but left again after a few months because they didn't get any job.

Jobs that don't require speaking Finnish (and at the current economic situations any jobs at all) are rare with much competition, and to make things worse next month a new flock of students will arrive - many of whom will also desperately search for jobs that don't require speaking Finnish.

I wish you luck - you will need it.

Some (very few) people manage to learn Finnish that quickly (and do work extremely hard for that) that they speak a near-perfect Finnish after 6 months.

The average foreigner takes only a 4 hours per week Finnish course and speaks after 1-2 years Finnish at some intermediate level that is good enough for a dish washer job, but not for a job like waitress or bartender where your main job is talking in Finnish to Finnish customers.

A friend of mine did get a job as a bartender, although she speaks little Finnish. So yeah there's a chance, but depending a lot on your luck applying without Finnish.
