Saunalahti offers jackets (and other stuff) for 6€?

Post by Alefsefr » Tue Aug 27, 2013 2:08 pm

Hi,

I received an offer from Saunalahti which also can be found here:
http://shop.tieku.fi/node/29116/form?me ... =1&popup=1

Perhaps all or a large group of their customers also received it. Any idea about the offer? Do they really give a jacket (with such appealing configs) or a bluetooth headphone (plus two magazines in Finnish) for 6€? Is it worth it?

I have never been interested in such offers as somehow I guess no one would really offer something unless he earns more than usual (of course short time sales do exist, but that is something else). So if they have this offer in a large scale, perhaps the stuffs do not worth buying. Do you think so? or you have different opinion?

And in case you want to buy, which one of the four options worth buying?

Many thanks. :)

You'll order the magazine and get jacket or knives or etc. on top. The price of subscription is then something else after the honeymoon period.

The terms of service states:

"Tieteen Kuvalehti ilmestyy 18 kertaa vuodessa. Oikeus hinnan- ja tilausehtojen muutoksiin pidätetään."

So if there is a commitment to a yearly subscription you end up paying (18x8,95)+5,90=€167
Hey, thanks. I did not notice it is a subscription, I thought it is just two copies of the magazine. So, obviously and like all other great offers: it is not worth it.

Thanks. I did not notice the subscription commitment.

Also, Tieteen Kuvalehti is a bad science magazine. Tiede is much better. (They've had some "have your friend order the magazine and receive a gift" campaigns, if gifts are the main selling point for you.)

Tieteen kuvalehti _was_ better when I read those actively. And by better I mean better content.

Also the offer is not from Saunalahti, but they get some money when they sell your information to advertisers. Cheap calls have their downsides too, free lunch etc.

Tieteen Kuvalehti once wrote a serious article about a machine that can extract free energy from another dimension. :lightbulb: :lightbulb: :lightbulb:

Tieteen kuvalehti is published by Bonnier and translated from the Danish original (Illustreret Videnskab, “Science Illustrated”).

The Tiede magazine (“Science”) is published by Tieteen tiedotus ry. in cooperation with Sanoma Magazines. While it aims to cover all kinds of scientific news and topics, it often gives voice and face to Finnish researchers, this way maintaining a local focus not necessarily present in a translated publication. (Including personal interviews, with the apparent purpose of trying to inspire the younger readers consider a career in science/research.)

I haven’t followed things much lately, but generally speaking, Tieteen kuvalehti tends to put more emphasis on pretty, colorful pictures (the “illustrated” aspect) and short science-y tidbits than the “dry stuff”. They do run longer and more thorough stories as well, of course, but the easily digestible ones — with little text and spread-sized pictures — feature much more prominently than in the Tiede magazine. Also, at least a while back, TK often forgot to add the names of the researchers to their stories, or references to the actual studies, instead resorting to vague formulations such as “Polish scientists have recently determined that...” (as if it didn’t matter what the study was or who actually conducted it.)

Not sure how they stack up these days but I always thought Tiede as being the more serious magazine of the two, trying to represent the local (Finnish) research community to the best of their ability on the side, whereas Tieteen kuvalehti appeared to be more geared towards generic pop sci entertainment, Nordic/Danish style. Of course, this also means that Tiede might appear a bit duller/drier in its tone and style even though both are popular science magazines and not by any means actual scientific journals.

Tiede had a make-over recently and looks a bit snappier and modern now, and maybe concentrates on pretty pictures a bit more. I don't read every issue, but I haven't noticed any decline in article quality.
