Car Inspection (annual)
Car is registrated in Finland, last owner went by perfectly with a clean sheet in 2010 Jan. My question is, should i take it to service and check it or try my luck. No idea how strict they can be in those inspections.
Any idea on the costs of normal service (oil, filters) in Helsinki?
By the way any idea how much it costs the annual inspection?
Thanks for the help.

Oil change is about 40-50 euros for the work.
4 liters of oil are roughly 40 euros. And some 6-10 euros for the filter. That's motonet.fi prices.
Katsastus is 100-150 euros, it depends if you have diesel or not.
I would go for katsastus. If you go to a service, they will try to force you do things that are not really needed yet, and making assumptions that you need this, and that. The yearly (or 2 years?) inspection will tell you what you really need to change to the car. I had the brake discs at minimum, and they let me go, saying that next time I won't pass. I changed them within 1 month, as it braking is one of those things you kind of need when driving a car.

Me too. The worst that can happen is that the car fails. You can then go to a garage knowing specifically what you want them to do. The alternative is giving a garage an open-ended task of a) duplicating what the inspection will do and b) doing whatever work they fancy doing / feel is needed. I don't see how that can ever be cheaper, quicker or easier that going straight to the inspection.MTB wrote:I would go for katsastus.

Re: Car Inspection (annual)
remember that if you do the inspection and fail, you can get it retested at the same place for 20€ or so.

My garage rathers I go to katsastus first and come with the "to do list" and then they check other stuff (belts, clutch squeaks) I want done.

I need new glasses and maybe an eye inspection.

Re: Car Inspection (annual)
The best option depends on how you are intending to keep your car; in a good working condition or use it with minimal expense until it's beyond repair. In the former case, you need to service and maintain it regularly regardless of inspection (inspection then just double checks if there's something that you may have missed), in the latter you don't do pretty much anything else than the possible corrections to pass the inspection and fill the fuel tank when needed. The latter option is cheaper, but may leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere or even get you killed.
Re: Car Inspection (annual)
I don't look at it that way. The original question was whether to take the car to a garage specifically for a pre-inspection check. If you are running the car into the ground with minimal expenses this would be a bad idea as it is an extra expense. If you regularly service your car and are sure it is kept in good condition there is no need for such a check. So how you maintain the car makes no difference; don't do a pre-inspection check, just go straight to the annual inspection.
