I would say this is the most stupid and rediculous tax I have ever known. Even when I dont own a TV and watch a minute of television a day, why do I have to pay?

Because you are part of a society that does watch television and some rely on it even. I am neither disabled, nor having elderly relatives in Finland but I don't complain about paying taxes that go in to these essential services. My point, tax is there to create revenue to provide for all needs and no single person will be able to use all services......

The only stupid thing is that it was made so explicitly sepearta as it does then annoy people, but I guess that this is the result of it being collected differently in the past.

There is actually a good reason behind why it is handled quite visibly separate in many countries:

If it was part of the normal budget, the government could easily cut next years budget if one channel would air something the government doesn't like.

Was a thread before on this. Just because you are a thrusting exciting guy who spends spare time on FF / going out, doesn't mean that there is not hundereds of thousands of pensioners that have nothing but the TV to keep them company :D My housebound gran's life would be a lot less good without TV (BBC not YLE but you get my drift). Then practical things like weather forecasts, news etc There are also the warnings that get broadcast through YLE TV & Radio.

If they have no other souce of entertainment/company/ information, I'd say that "rely" is appropriate

hasn't this come up again and again. I don't have kids therefore why should I contribute to education here (and since I was educated in the UK feel no debt to the finnish education system for my own schooling). My parents don't live here, so why should i contribute to pensions or health care (being in quite good health myself I have yet to visit a finnish hospital). Not being a boat owner means i have no need of the coast guard. Public transport also shouldn't receive any of my taxation money either since I have my own car.I never visit the library but buy books from amazon .. so funding for libraries should be deducted from my tax bil ... and the list goes on ...

On the other hand, since it is a state run channel so you can't expect much except some boring colorless dull programs like these:

. For better programs and foreign stuff go MTV3 or Nelonen, or better download stuff :)

Then on the other hand they also buy series from HBO. Why this is considered a key state service, I have no idea.

The reasoning behind that decision was "something for everyone". Doesn't matter that HBO's stuff would most likely been on other channels without yle.

You understand that this tax is for the main 2 channels, not the commercial ones, right?

It pays for
-unbiased news.
-good documentaries and programs.
-import and translation of decent programming.

Read Riku's reply. I think you are getting yourself a bit confused about the role of government. They do not generally provide services and charge the users based on intensity of use. So TV provision may benefit pensioners a bit more, but e.g. Maternity care/education doesn't. Tax and social provision is not supposed to add up so everyone gets exactly what they pay for. I guess you have options- vote for a party that reduces the state, move to a country that has a smaller state involvement or accept the status quo.

PS also remember pensioners were not born pensioners. Most of them contributed 40 years of taxes that built the roads/hospitals and other infrastructure that you are currently benefitting from.

And exactly what money and how would they have got it?

Yleisradio (YLE) is following the Yleisradio law. It states what kind of programs Yle has to produce, and also that it has to be publicly funded. The funding was changed from a tv license to a tax. You may disagree with how the funding is actually collected, but without disbanding Yleisradio it is going to be collected somehow from the public. There is a good collection about relevant links here: http://yle.fi/yleisradio/toimintaperiaatteet

Anyway... public broadcasting is a pretty common concept. Not all of them are funded by taxes or license fees, but I think all Nordic ones are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_broadcasting

If you find the programs dull, get the Yleisradio law changed so that they have to ask you first.

See, as I mentioned, if the TV is targeted for pensioners and all the programs are DULL STUFF, then why not charge only from Pension earners ? If you are charging some Exciting Bunch of people then put on some Exciting stuffs. As simple as that....

The definition of home bounds goes beyong limit, the Unemployed job seeker, who is healthy enough to work sits in front of TV the whole day, how's that going to develop the nation ?

TV is never good and never have been. It takes away creativity from Kids, they get more addicted to watching BIG BROTHER (Oh yeah, that social porn) than doing some sports with friends. Here too the list goes on and on.

So, the solution is charge the pensioners for TV, let them watch the DULL program or Big Brother from their couch, and save the future generation from watching stupidity of others life. After all, Pensioners doesn't live with small Kids, hence, I solved the problem of whole nation and its habitants.

In reality, there should be an investigation of the Swiss Bank Accounts of those who proposed this stupid BILL and the one who passed this stupid BILL. It all happens in politics all over.

Can I ask you one thing: Why are you here in Finland? School? Job? Maybe family reason (Finnish girlfriend/wife or maybe Finnish boyfriend/husband)? I don't know why you are here but there is a reason why and it's your own!

One thing is clear for me: pensioners and all elderly in general have made Finland what is today, what we have today, what we get today! They have worked they asses off to bring Finland at this level, they have fought/died in wars for Finland to be independent and free, for their grand-kids to have a country and better conditions! And yes Finland is one of the best countries in the world, with the best services, safety and so forth! I am a Finnish citizen for few months and proud of it! Finland is my home country and I am proud to be here and I respect Finnish people. I respect the elderly people because they build this wonderful country! But, what I see and hear? foreigners that don't appreciate anything, foreigners complaining about a f***ng tax and saying that pensioners should pay it instead! With all the respect: F**K OFF!!! Go back to your own country if you are not happy here!

YOU SHOULD PAY THE TAX SO THE PENSIONERS WILL BE ABLE TO WATCH AND HEAR THE NATIONAL TV/RADIO CHANNELS! THEY DESERVE IT (at least this)!!!

P.S. The public channel doesn't have programs gen "Geordie Shore" and 15 minutes commercials every 5 minutes of program.
