Continous Residence Permit

How is it now please ? Four years or five years of continuous living in Finland, in order to apply for longterm residence permit ?
And how early (prior to expiry of the current permit) can or should one apply ? I take it that if permit is granted, it will start from the date of previous permit expiry date. Ie. if the current permit expires in May, should or can one apply for it in 6 months advance? Then wait and new permit is valid from June 2014 onwards.

Sorry if sound a bit confused. Pls do not tell me to go to migri pages.....

Can you find the phone number of the relevant police office? I'd call and ask as the situation can vary. A P permit can applied after 4 years on A, and there isn't any point in NOT applying, after you come eligible.

We are tallking here about applying for A permit, not to confuse it with P type. ??

Still have not found an answer as to how early can should apply for it .
