Re: Replacing winter tire studs
Hi!
Nobody adds more studs in old tires - not even the professional shops. The studs just won't stay if installed afterwards.
- If your winter tires are worn out and missing studs - just buy new ones.
The studs are there for your own safety - you don't want to risk that, would you?

Thanks... my challenge is that the tires themselves are still nearly perfect, 7-8mm of thread on all of them. Hence I didnt want to replace them if I could just replace some of the worn studs.

Re: Replacing winter tire studs
Back in the day you'd remove the studs from old tires and use them as summer tires - if you lived on gravel roads that is. Nowadays nobody does that much either.

Haha, so true.Pursuivant wrote:Back in the day you'd remove the studs from old tires and use them as summer tires - if you lived on gravel roads that is. Nowadays nobody does that much either.
When spring comes, my father-in-law and I would sit in the frontyard and remove them studs from his wintertires.
Yes, I admit, the first time he asked me to help, I was kinda... puzzled. Haha.

That's normal.carushe wrote:Thanks... my challenge is that the tires themselves are still nearly perfect, 7-8mm of thread on all of them.
The two things to watch out for with winter tyres:
- studs
- softness and pliability of the rubber (after about 4 years, the rubber gets hard and doesn't grip the ice as well anymore)
The above two items usually wear long before the tread depth.
