Soundproofing

Post by Liam1 » Tue Sep 24, 2013 9:57 am

Are there any experts or people with experience of soundproofing?

We're expecting a new arrival so need to "create" an extra bedroom. The logical room is in the basement and next to the technical room (have an earth heating system so pump that makes some noise)

We'd like to be able to soundproof this - any ideas on feasibility, effectiveness and costs? Also how to get started? I guess technology has moved on from me collecting and sticking egg cartons on the walls!!!!

Cheers
Liam

Does the sound of the compressor come through the air or through the structures?
Mass stops sound, so the heavier wall is better (http://www.e-weber.fi/kahi-tiilet-ja-ha ... tteet.html). Decibel doors? Sound traps in ventilation ducts? Rubber dampers under the pump?

What system is it? How much noise does it make?
Before we got our heat pump we were warned that they can be noisy, but in reality I have never heard any noise from it. Either we were lucky to get a silent model or there is something in the installation that maybe you could change to reduce/eliminate the noise yours makes. What sort of noise is it?

Thanks to you both.
I'll have a listen and be a bit more specific. It's not very bad, but obviously we'd a bit more sensitive to noise if close to where we sleep...
