Kiitos from a freshly minted suomalainen

Dear Kielikoulu,

I can’t believe that it has been 4.5 years since I sat in a youth hostel asking you guys the difference between vihannekset and juurekset, the meaning of heikkoja jäitä jne. Since then, my wife and my own Finnish adventure has been wonderful. So much so that we now have a son born here and we are now proud dual citizens. Trotting moose in one passport, kangaroo in the other! 

As I hold my new, out of the envelope, suomalainen passi, I always think of you guys as helping me to get this far. I once heard the definition of a perfect day as showing someone a kindness that they could not repay directly. If that is so, then I hope and wish you all have many perfect days.

So while I'm here I can't resist asking about this sentence....

"Vegetables and root vegetables".... So I assume the word, vihannes must include ALL vegetables, or is there an implication that it's a certain kind of vegetable....such as maybe not including tomatoes or potatoes ...or, hey, one of my favourites, especially at this time of year...palsternakka.....

I really don’t remember what was in the YKI test but certainly no green vegetables or root vegetables. Given 4 years of kielikoulu discussion threads, the reading section was relatively easy. In writing, I tried covering up my lack of verb+case ending combos with incongruous use of optatiivi, but no luck... In any case, I passed.

Talking of heikkoja jäitä, I didn’t do an empiric test of that but I had the chance in winter 2010 to test out paksuja jäitä driving on the frozen sea off Turku. Experience of a life time, especially when you get to see two huge merikotka take to flight..
