Well, I got the stats 2003 out myself right today.

The number of foreigners is now 2% ... compared to 10 years ago in 1993 it was 0,9% ! ...like 10 years ago I had to tell foreign peole "Don't mind they stare, they probably never seen a foreigner but once before.."

I saw my first "live" black person in ca. 1978 ...
Cheers, Hank W.

This picture is taken from the "Virtual Finland: Foreigners in Finland" link from this thread.

Okay, now does anyone see anything kinda weird about this picture? It's kinda saying, "Here is a group of your typical foreigners in Finland" and the picture is a bunch of a homeboys dressed like thugs.

The dude second over from the left is drunk and can't stand up. The guy in the very right is giving the "East Coast" sign with his hands. And the guy second over from the right, I see him all the time hanging out in front of the downtown train station.

Hmmmm.........I wonder why (as it's stated just below the picture), "Finland, too, has its share of racism and hostility to foreigners"

"Foreigners in Finland: We don't want you here but our quota says otherwise."

I would like to see more figures and facts on that.

For instance, how are the unemployment figures divided over the immigrants groups.

Are there any statistics on that? The latest figures I saw were from the year 2000.

"Grrr!! Those foreigners come here to Finland to sit on ass all day and collect unemployment!"

"Grrr!! Those foreigners come here to Finland and take all of our good jobs!"

And statistics about who they would like to hire to work in their company?

Who they are hiring?

good jobs?

if the Finns would even do their work well.

I would go to some foreigner to get the service if they just would answer to my questions.

In työkkäri they don't allow students to apply work, if you ask something they don't know anything, and thay are saying "look for yourself." Maybe everyone who working in työkkäri is that 500 day unemployed worker...

If you apply into some market for yourself. They don't hire you B/C it's cheaper to hire those unemployed people... and they are not intrested even working there. They just have to be that 3 month period then they can be at home...

I dont' know...

As far as I know Annikka Forsander is one of the few who collects these figures. Her report 'luottamuksen ehdot' is based on data from 1997 though. I don't know whether these figures have been updated. This is an English review of that:

Well, I have my own business. I just hired a Finnish woman to work with me.

Why? Why not. She has the qualities I look for in a collegue, and is more than qualified in terms of professional experience, and formal qualifications (although I personally don't think that qualifications are any substitute for real world experience). She brings additional skills to the business that mean there is a real chance to expand into new business. Oh- by the way, she's also my better half.

If a couple of other foreign businesses answer you, you can build your own statistics. Either that or we wait 'till Hank has finished tinkering with the VW's and he'll dig out some real stats for us

Cheers

I didn't find the French! Where are they! Are we so few? Well, that might explain why I feel so lonely in here...

When I was studying in Joensuu in '95, my room mate was a French guy. I think he had a pretty miserable time here too...

But he didn't have . - only a grumpy Welshman!

Plenty of people here for you to socalise with :D

The joy of living in another country is not sticking together with your countrymen, it is getting out and meeting the locals

Go enjoy yourself :!:

Cheers
Gavin
