Homebrewing in Finland?
Homebrewing in Finland?
Hi,
I am a former homebrewer who has relocated to Finland and is interested in making nice strong ales again. Does anyone know if there is a shop in Helsinki that sells supplies? I need to get everything, as I am starting over - fermenting bins, hydromoeter, yeast, malt, hops, etc. Alternatively, does anyone know if there is a good Internet site for ordering these things that will ship to Helsinki without being insanely expensive for shipping?
I have seen some simple lager kits (prehopped malts) in common supermarkets like S-Market and Valintatalo, so I know there must be some sort of 'scene' for homebrewing. So maybe there is a shop that is more specialised?
Thanks!

well there was a scene when people were poor and couldn't afford to buy from the store. theres a number of stores... there was a number of stores around, even specialized ones, but now you need to find them... magic word is kotiviini & tarvikkeet... now where in Helsinki... ummm... someone whose been walking about with open eyes needs to fill you in... I*think* theres one in my local mall in Myyrmanni tucked away in a niche. vats & such you can try also finding in the hardware/plastics stores.

There was a shop in Itä-keskus on the second floor, but its been a while since I've been to the big city, so I'm not sure if its still there.

There is indeed a homebrewing shop in the Myyrmanni shopping center. It's called Viinimaailma and can be a bit difficult to find because you don't enter it from inside the shopping center but through a separate entrance on the Paalutori side of the building. They stock a decent selection of malts, malt extracts, and hops.
They used to have a branch in Itäkeskus, but it no longer exists.

well you *can* get from the inside, but you need to know to go into the stairwell by the elevators behind the R-kioski, and through to the other side...

Re: Homebrewing in Finland?
Are there any homebrewing groups or meet ups in Helsinki or Tampere?

There is some decent Finnish beer about thesedays. Panimo Ale and Huvilla ESB are my favourites.hyksos wrote:Thanks! I might trek out to Itäkeskus and see what I can find ...
