Native English Speaker Looking For Job

Post by shikzwnjk » Thu Jan 14, 2010 3:21 pm

Hi,

I'm a native English speaker and I'm seeking a job. I speak very little Finnish and so far I've come up empty-handed because of not speaking Finnish. I'm not fussy about the type of job.

Thanks,

Maureen

Hello

I am also a native English speaker, been in the Turku area for about 3 weeks now.

Its a huge struggle to get a job without a firm understanding of Finnish (which i dont have) and/or some sought after qulifications/experience (which, yes you guessed it, i dont have). The things you do for love eh.. :)

From reading other posts here (its a pretty good Forum) it seems that even though we arent fussy what type of job we get, the lower paid ones "usually" need more Finnish skills due to the fact its "usually" lower educational work, therefore theres a lack of employer and fellow employees speaking English. The English speaking jobs tend to be in high-ish earning sectors, IT etc, or multinationals.

When i spoke to the Job Center here, the man basically said, learn Finnish. On that subject trying to get on a Finnish course may take some time, earliest one i have come across starts in May.

Anywho, off on a tangent there. Post if you get a job (let me know how lol!)

Perhaps you've tried them already, but I thought I ask just in case -- did you check the Iltalukio courses in Turku? classes there are free and start every 6 weeks (lessons twice a week), I think a beginner class should have started in January, so if it's not completely full you might have a chance to join still. Also at the työväenopisto I think a new beginners course has started in January and usually it's no problem to join in after it's begun (provided it's not completely full of course, but best is to go there in person and ask the teacher if you can still join).

I was given a list by the job center and i rang them. The Italukio advised me that their next beginners course wasnt going to start until September and thta i need to talk to them in August to apply.

Ill give the other place a call tomorrow though, maybe theres a spot free :)

Thanks!

I realize this post is almost a year old, but I was wondering if any of you had ever found a job?

I married a finnish man and he moved to the US to be with me, but recently he has decided that he doesn't believe he was (or ever will be) ready to leave Finland for good. He lived here in the US for a year and a half (studying, which is how we met) but at the time, he knew he would be going home eventually. After we got married in the US, he began to realize that he is here forever. I have been considering moving to Finland if I want to save our marriage, and I realize how difficult and absurd it is to believe I can find a job. I am a recent college graduate, a double major in Marketing and Management, however I have yet to find a job in my field here in the US. I, of course, do not speak Finnish.. I have been trying to learn it, but the resources in the US are awful and my husband doesn't know where to begin at teaching me. If I moved to Finland, I would attend Finnish language classes, although I know it would still be perhaps years until I am able to comfortably speak any fluency.

I have interest working at an English playschool. I'm not sure what kind of "experience" you need for that, though. I have worked at a ski resort here in Michigan in the Kid's Camp. I work mainly with 3-6 year olds but ages can range up to 12 years old. I have 2 seasons of experience and really enjoy working with the children.

So I'll ask again, did any of you ever find a job? Any job? And how did the language courses work out for you all? Thanks a lot and I hope I can get some responses here.

Object-
I would advise all of you to sit down and write a small structured framework with a very clear understanding of "what you are good at and what talent/s you can increase" !

Theory-
There is only one way to become successful in Finland=Make more money that the others!
If the Majority of Businesses could have proof(according to their Intelligence) , that you could make more money for them than most of the others?
Yes , you guessed correctly, your employable and highly favored.

In Practice-The hard part.
How do you show a business in Finland your above average skill of increasing their profit?
You need to use your Object framework and develop a plan to provide a proposal business that "indeed you will make them money.
Prove to them you can make money!

Or you can prove to them your just like the other Finnish speaking low-brows whose purpose is to "adequately prolong the Experience"!
