Where to buy quality cookware (pots/pans) on a small budget.

Post by JustHuman1948 » Wed Nov 20, 2013 10:44 pm

Hi all,

I've been to Stockmanns and I'm not really aware of any other places at this point where I would find metal cookware (NOT teflon coated as it has serious health implications). I'm looking for metal cookware of a decent quality. I know that there are many different metal options and I've not decided at this point which one I would opt for. Are there outlets where I could find this sort of thing? What are my chances of finding preowned cookware in decent condition at recycling centres? I don't mind if it's preowned and lightly used. I would also be happy with cast iron cookware of the kind that Le Creuset sell, but at outlet/second hand price (I can't justify spending €300+ on a casserole dish, no matter how good it is). I'm looking for different sizes of metal cookware but in particular, I really need a large one that would allow me to prepare a stew/casserole for about 8-10 people.

I'd be grateful for your input.

Best wishes,

JustHuman1948

I got a cast iron Lodge skillet from Amazon UK and I love it. Best investment ever. I like it better than the ones I've seen in retail stores here and it cost like 4-5 times less. They have different kinds of cast iron dutch oven/pot things as well...dunno if any of 'em are to your liking or budget. Another thing I was looking at getting when I was non-Teflon-pan-shopping was a hiiliteräspannu from verkkokauppa. I've never had one of these types of pans before but it seems quite nice and I've heard good things about them.

In terms of local stores where you can buy in-person...well, it couldn't hurt to take a look at places like tori.fi or browse the kirppises? Sometimes you see cookware at the flea markets...the heavy duty good kinds that grandmas tend to have. But it's probably quite hit-or-miss in terms of finding what you want.

have you been to the iitala outlet stores. their deals vary by month though. The prices are different to the more common iitala shops so don't confuse the two.

I once went to a factory "clearance" they had setup, basically a large empty shop they had rented for a week and filled with cardboard boxes of the surplus products. That was amazingly cheap but I haven't seen this kind of thing often. That really matched the definition of factory prices.

The outlet shops have lots of "second quality" products although often I struggle to see the imperfection in the plate or glass that makes it second quality.

Well... depends what kind of quality you are looking for, but I have liked the pots and pans I have bought from IKEA. They have two cast iron + enamel inside pots at a really good price: http://www.ikea.com/fi/fi/catalog/products/90232840/ (in English: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90232840/) and http://www.ikea.com/fi/fi/catalog/products/50232842/ (English: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50232842/).

CH, I'm curious to know if the IKEA pots you have say Made in France at the bottom?
