Ice Hockey World Championship!

Post by Sara » Mon Apr 26, 2004 7:17 pm

Anyone else besides me watching?

Finland put up a impressive battle against the US on Saturday. They managed a turn around losing 0-2, to come up 4-2.

Currently they are whipping Ukraine, shame more of the goals arent making it into the back of the net though.

Ukraine have a bad rep for using the hockey stick in the wrong way, nothing has changed! They are real dirty players! :x

Yes, I was watching it too. Rather good fun, I think. I'm not normally a hockey fan, but as its the World Championships, I give it a shot! I hope they do better than last year, which was a bit disappointing in the end. (whisper it: but quite funny too!)

As I said, I'm not normally a fan of the sport. I asked the following question in another thread, but to no avail. Well, Daive suggested the answer concerned beer and fags, but I'm not so sure...
Gonzo wrote:Why is the game divided into thirds? Surely this means that whatever advantage there is in shooting up one end, one team will receive more of it than the other. And if there really is no advantage, why bother changing directions at all.

Halves, like in football, would make so much more sense. But, I'm sure there must be a good reason. Hockey fans - enlighten me.
Maybe you can help, Sara. :?
Cos it's strange, isn't it. You stand in the middle of a library and go 'Aaaaaagghhh!!' and everyone just stares at you. But you do the same thing on an aeroplane, and everyone joins in.

One of the main reasons for splitting the game into three is cos the ice gets all bolloxed up and grooved and stuff, not so pleasant to skate on let alone play hockey. That is where the Zamboni comes in useful, they repair the ice, taking off the crap and then adding warm water to refreeze the ice all nice and smooth! Marvelous stuff! So I guess that's the reason they make three periods, to maintain the ice.

Thanks for that.

I knew there had to be a good reason, but my lack of exposure to the game blinded me from the obvious!

Go Suomi!!!

Everyone knows I've been watching :D

Had my nails bitten down to the nubs over the Canada - Austria game. The boys fought back, but it was very unexpected for Canada to spend most of the game scoreless...

Not to mention its also quite a physical game, not to mention tiring. Does the lads good to catch their breath and cool down a bit!

Aha, it has just occured to me that whilst these point you mention, Daive and Sara, do justify the necessity for numerous stoppages in ice-hockey, it does not explain why there are two such stoppages, causing the game to be split into uneven thirds!

So, assuming there can be even the slightest advantage of shooting up one end: fans congregated at a particular place, the rink sloping(!), superstition... this system does not seem fair.

Discuss.

I always assumed because its an American sport it was split into three instead of two so that there could be an extra advertisment break :!:

American, Canadian, Same thing :D

Ice Hockey was not invented, nor did it start on a certain day of a particular year. It originated circa 1800 with students at Canada's first college, King's College, when they adapted the exciting field game of Hurley to the ice of their favorite skating pond. They originated a new winter game, Ice Hurley, which gradually developed into Ice Hockey. Thomas Chandler Haliburton, of Windsor, who was the first Canadian to acquire international acclaim as a writer, and who wrote the first history of Nova Scotia, told of King's boys being first to play "hurley on the ice". This is the earliest reference in English literature to a stick-ball game being played on ice. The development of Ice Hurley into Ice Hockey is chronicled in the newspapers of Nova Scotia, the first province to be developed in the country. The first equipment with which Ice Hockey was played naturally developed in Nova Scotia as well. "Hockey" skates, "Hockey"sticks, wooden "Hockey"pucks, "Hockey" goal nets, as well as the position of Rover, and the early rules of the game all developed in Nova Scotia as one would expect. Nova Scotians were also first to use the forward pass and to allow the goal keeper down on the ice to protect his "goal".
