Old car no warranty, take or not?
Old car no warranty, take or not?
Hi,
I found an old car on nettiauto and want to buy it. When I came to dealer (autotalo) they said however that they won't give any warranty (even a single day) for the car which is diesel 2004 model, 180,000km and sold at 8000EUR. Is there any law stating that the dealers have to give a minimum warranty for used cars? If no then how would you go in my case? I have never owned any cars in my life so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I don't think there is any minimum warranty. Here's some info in Finnish so it's maybe of limited value.

The general rule still applies that the seller is responsible for the information they give you (if it breaks just when you drive out of the shop, you would have a good case). In general Finnish consumer protection laws don't specify fixed term limits (only expected life of the product in question) during which the manufacturer/seller is responsible for faults in new items. This means you would have a case if you could convince people that the piece that broke is expected to last over a decade.
However, do note that you can buy as much coverage as you want from car insurance companies. You should research their plans to see if it makes sense though since I bet their compensation payments go down based on the age of the car.

Of course I don't. I got some information about the car's history on autorekisteri.fi. Could somebody who has experience dealing with the cars tell something about it? Is it worth the price? Thanks a lot!roger_roger wrote: 180K+ Diesel engine, 2004 made in 8000 ? This shows you really don't have experience in buying cars....

180 k in ten years is not much for a diesel.roger_roger wrote: But beware, there are few stories that Used Car dealers tell in Finland.
1.) This car was driven by only single person till now, a women who just went for Office and Shopping, No heavy use, it has been taken very good care because of female driver.
2.) It belong to the Old Man who hardly uses it. It was just in his garage........ remember 180k+ withing 10 years![]()

If the owner lived in the countryside (s)he might indeed have used it mainly for shopping.
(I drove 600 k in ten years with one car)
Find the more or less same auto on http://www.nettiauto.com and you get a good indication.reindeer wrote: Is it worth the price?

Looks like it had damage, or has been reposessed by some or the other, definately not worth 8k.
It would have been a decent price for that type of car, but only in good condition and impeccable record

How you got into that conclusion?kharnynb wrote:Looks like it had damage, or has been reposessed by some or the other, definately not worth 8k.

Well the history does look a bit patchy but I think it has simply been financed throughout most of its life. It does look a bit old as of late.

I think the reason for that suspicion is those "teknisten tietojen muutos" and "muutoskatsastus", but...Oho wrote:Well the history does look a bit patchy but I think it has simply been financed throughout most of its life. It does look a bit old as of late.

If you bought it in Tuusula..... All I can do is laugh.
What a sh*thole of a place to buy secondhand cars. They are all creepy sleazy lying b*stards.
By the way, I have a Golf VW. It's just over 20 years old and has only 167,00km on it. How cool is that? It should have at least 100,000 km more on it.
I need to sell it in January. It's in good condition and has had only very minor issues since I've had it. You know what will get it to sell quickly? The fact it only has 167,000 km on it. It wouldn't matter if it were some rust bucket on it's last leg (which it isn't). Apparently it's the kms driven which determine how good a car is here. And that you've just gone to Katsastus, which I have.
I was married to a car genius who knew/knows absolutely everything possible about cars. And knows how to fix everything, except for what is needed to be done at a garage if he doesn't have the means. I feel I've been very fortunate here in Finland, as I've had many cars over the years and I would have had to spend 1000's of euros at garages if I didn't know someone who could care for my cars for practically free.

Katsastus gives you "time to drive" even if the car is a death trap (which it shouldn't be if it passed). Kms driven is a good indicator. 167kkm vs. 267kkm, there is bound to be more wear in other, in places you won't see.Flossy1978 wrote:You know what will get it to sell quickly? They are? Well I doubt any more so than any other primarily second hand car dealerships.Flossy1978 wrote:If you bought it in Tuusula..... All I can do is laugh.

Re: Old car no warranty, take or not?
No, it's in Helsinki. However, it's crazy that the dealer didn't want to give a single day of warranty. How can we dare giving out 8K on something that can probably be someone's biggest issue? The dealer couldn't convince the customers that it's the car they should buy. I love the car because it's a Mercedes and had a test drive for about 20mins. It was basically ok but the gear box is a bit problematic that the gap between the gear positions is too large (I guess it's because the car has been used a lot or is it common for most of old cars?). That's all I can tell about it because of my little experience with cars. Could somebody look at the owners history and say something about it? Thank you!Flossy1978 wrote:If you bought it in Tuusula..... All I can do is laugh.

If you mean that you must move the shifter a long distance as you shift from 1 to 2etc, then it isn't because it has been used a lot, it is just MB.reindeer wrote:It was basically ok but the gear box is a bit problematic that the gap between the gear positions is too large (I guess it's because the car has been used a lot or is it common for most of old cars?).
