Cashing a UK Cheque

Post by Godzilla » Tue Dec 17, 2013 4:39 pm

I recently performed some small service for a UK based organization, and in reward their Master of Coin drew out a Quill and Parchment, and did bestowe upon me a Cheque which promised a Payment of 75 Pounds and no Shillings and no Pence drawn upon a Banke.

Being American, this archaic mode of payment is also familiar to me, alongside with paying for things with goats and chickens, we do similar.

I don't get over to the UK much, but will be going in a couple of months, and could drop in to a branch office of the bank. In the States, if I walk into the bank on which the check is drawn, they will honor it and pay out cash, if that is how I want it. Does it work the same in the UK?

Or is there some easy way to do this in Finland, without costing more than the check is actually worth?

In my opinion, it is best to do it in the UK, otherwise you will get hit big time with bank charges.
I am not sure if thou dost needeth a bank account in the UK for them to cash it, hopefully not.

Indeed!
Id say:

It only costs 11 euros? I might just take it to Nordea then; not a good solution but at least it will be done.

Worth asking anyway. I don't bank with Nordea but I would expect their charge to be similar.

Won't they charge if you dare to put your dirty foot on their floor?

They charge about EUR 11, but they dont guarantee that any banks in the middle wont take any other charges.

collecting a sterling check in Finland will cost you most probably more than 75 pounds. do not even try it here. if u go to uk any time soon it just must be cheaper there . so do not bother local bankers with your piece of parchment that would require a semi blind postal pigeon for further delivery to a far away and alien island of Brits and Gauls ....
What do you want from me?????

I went to Nordea today with two cheques from Canada to be cashed and I was told that it would cost 125 for each cheque. :|

They also have a thing about dates here, I think they charge you more (or even refuse to cash it) if it is older than a certain date. (Even, at least in England, cheques to do not expire)
