just again read that somebody in here had a hard time with his finnish plumber. So just in case you need honest and reliable plumbing service for realistic prices I push this up.

We are in Lahti, but for bigger projects we can come also somewhere else...

... if the going rate is currently 3€ per km I'm not sure you'll get many offers from folk in Helsinki ;-)

What's your take on the "shopping" issue that came up in the other thread? Would you agree that it's general practice in the trade to charge the customer for the time spent shopping for tools/supplies? Would you recommend that customers ask for a fixed price quote? What's the best way to get a good deal when dealing with a self-employed plumber?

EDIT: Added a link to the relevant thread

no, the going rate is for sure not 3,-/km and that is also not the normal rate in Finland, it's something like 0,45/km.

Yes, shopping time is always paid by the customer, but of course you can also buy the stuff by yourself, if you know exactly what to buy. That means of course no waranty on that parts, but it's an option to safe some money.

the best way is to agree the details before work is started, if possible in written form.

Yup, that you can get tax free from employer... if employer takes that money from customer there is some VAT to be paid. Thus 0,56/km sounds like a fair starting point.

We take 0,45/km and that's ok for us.
The 3,-/km came from another thread where a finish plumber charged 3,-, please don't mix that up, I'm just trying to offer our service, it's hard enought to survive in here running an own business.

I read that other thread. I also do gigs with my own car, that costs to company 0,45€/km, thus the customer pays 0,56 or more. Either the mileage gets billed as driven or it gets buried in an offer with the usual markups.

Yes, that's the normal way.

I just wanted to make sure that nobody in here thinks we are the people, who try to cheat on customers whereever it's possible, for example by charging 3,-/km.
