Residence Permit Difficulties

Post by MonaLisa » Mon Feb 03, 2014 5:43 pm

Hi,
I have been living in Finland for 10 months with my Finnish fiancee and have a B type residence permit.
We have been to the local TE offices a few times but they are not interested or want to help me with finding a job, unemployment benefits or even advising any language classes as my residence permit says B and not A.
I have been employed as an electrician the previous 10 years but since being here I have had one temporary job as a warehouse worker for one month and last week have just started delivering newspapers at night, but the pay will be less than €200 per month.
I am however, able to apply for a workers residence permit as this is permanent, continuos work. I am hoping to recieve an A type permit so the TE offices can start helping me searching for work as an electrician and help find language classes to attend. But if I am to recieve another B type permit (which I have a bad feeling about) I can't continue to live here €200 a month!
We are planning our wedding for a years time, but recently we have been talking about heading down to the Magistras office and getting married there just so I can get a spouse permit, which should give me the A type permit that the TE offices want, and then claim unemployment benefits which will triple my current pay.
I do not want to do this as our wedding day next year wouldn't be the same, but it may be the only way. However, we still are not sure what happens if we get married quickly as there might be long processing times with application etc so it may not improve the situation either!
We don't know anyone who has been through a similar situation, or who can give us any advice what to do!
Any advice on this situation would be appreciated.
Thanks!!

1- TE office is not interested in helping you finding a job, no matter what RP you have. "Just use the internet"
2- Electrician is a certified profession. It means that you need to have a Finnish certificate and at least one year apprenticeship with a qualified electrician. Without a really good knowledge of the language it is a mission impossible.
3- Marriage is a solution for the permit, but it won't bring you a job or help from TE office. And if the marriage looks like a circumvent for a work RP, you can expect some critical questions or a long processing time.

What is the basis of your B permit? I think all the B permits require means of support. However, you should note that it's possible to get into Finnish social security even with a B permit (it's just more difficult). One fact that supports your application is that you have lived over six months with your fiancee.

If you haven't yet tried what Kela says, you can fill the application and see what happens:

Well, the TE keskus will put you on integration assistance, finnish course and train you to be a bus driver on A-permit. But no, people who find jobs don't go there, unemployeds do...

People who find jobs do go there, but only when it's needed to get benefits until the next contract starts :)

No one is entitled to give a damn about you here unless you are a family member to a Finn (or a Finn yourself). Otherwise you're practically own your own, or you're a tourist. So stop going into TE-toimisto and harassing them because there's literally nothing they can do for you. I have a friend there who sees people like you walk in without appointments and she's forced to regurgitate the same answers every day because apparently being told once doesn't work.
