Moving out of Finland and taxes
Moving out of Finland and taxes
Hello,
I have a question about moving out of Finland permanently and still paying taxes.
I am from Argentina, been living in Finland for 6 years, and for that also gained a finn citizenship. I read that if a finn move abroad he/she still needs to pay taxes in Finland. How will that work? Even if I move permanently from Finland, have my Kela card cancelled, do I still need to pay taxes?
Thank you

Re: Moving out of Finland and taxes
aren't you mixing up american citizens and the rest of the world? I think only the USA has the rule that they demand taxes from their citizens even if they leave the USA, don't have a house there, don't have income there and never visit again. USA taxation still due!!
When you leave Finland you might even get some money back from the taxman. Eg you leave in June but paid tax for the period Jan .. June on the basis you would also have an income for June .. Dec. So will probably have paid too much tax.

Re: Moving out of Finland and taxes
You pay tax for the time you have residency in Finland. IIRC it's only if you live in Finland for more than 6 months or 180(?) days that you must declare your overall income to verokarhu.
Re: Moving out of Finland and taxes
you will only be liable to pay taxes on income originated in Finland, for example if you rent out your apartment, or royalties for intellectual property. That income is also subject to double taxation treaties (if any) with the country of your new residence.
Another kind of taxes that you shall pay relate to property that you own in Finland (apartment, house, land, forest, car). these taxes are deductible from the rent that you may collect for the property in question.
and the final thing- these above taxes you will pay irrespective of the fact whether you are a Finnish citizen or not. Thus if let us say a German person owns an apartment in Finland and permanently resigns in France, he will pay property tax in Finland (undercut able in France, due to the fact that it relates to the property in Finland) and , in case that he rents out the apartment, he would have to pay income tax in Finland and in France (depending on the double taxation treaty).

In short, yes, as a Finnish citizen you are tax resident of Finland for 3 years after you have moved out of the country unless you show to the tax people that you no longer have ties to Finland. You must specifically apply for being exempted from paying taxes to Finland and tell them that none of the conditions below applies to you any more:
- You continue to have a permanent home in Finland.
- Your spouse continues to live in Finland.
- You continue to own a unit of real property in Finland other than a summer cottage.
- You continue to be covered by the Finnish social security system.
- You operate a trade or business in Finland.
- You perform work, labour or personal services in Finland.
So talk to the Vero office people and explain your situation, they really are there to help you.

Hi.
I assume that you have been working here and paying the pension money.
Please remember to claim the money when you reach the retirement age. Currently it's 63 years of age.
