YLE HD broadcast issues

Post by pavi » Sun Feb 09, 2014 8:41 am

Since Friday I have been trying to get HD channel to come up on my television. What is it that I am missing? My television is quite new so it supports hd broadcast. I tried to search by running setup. I live in Espoo. Is our antenna not appropriate.?

Anyone tried this and got it to work could provide some hints on what I could check.

Ylen HD-muotoiset tv-kanavat Yle TV1 HD ja Yle TV2 HD näkyvät DNA:n antennijakelussa ja Yle TV1 HD, Yle TV2 HD ja Yle Fem HD näkyvät Digitan antennijakelussa 7.2.2014 alkaen.

Antennitaloudessa vastaanottoon tarvitaan sopiva antenni:

- DNA:n lähetysten vastaanottoon VHF-antenni, joka on suunnattu DNA:n lähetysasemaan

- Digitan lähetysten vastaanottoon UHF-antenni, joka on suunnattu Digitan D-nipun lähetinasemaan.

Lisäksi tarvitaan joko Antenna Ready HD -hyväksytty -televisio, jossa on sisäänrakennettu T2-viritin, tai teräväpiirtokuvaa näyttävä televisio ja Antenna Ready HD -hyväksytty digiboksi.

(I'm sure Jukka is already writing a lengthy troubleshooting guide, so I'll leave the rest to him. I don't really know anything about antennas.)

there are a million and a half things needed to get HD working in Finland. Where does your TV signal come from ? cable to the home or antenna on top of it ? if cable then actually a cable DVB signal or antenna signal via a cable? And if antenna on the roof then a UHF antenna or VHF as well (since HD via the terrestrial network is only in VHF. why VHF we wonder??).
Then all kinds of compatibility issues come up with the TV. And if the TV is ok then are the settings on the TV correct.
On top of that you might get YLE in HD but not MTV3 since MTV3 is scrambled and needs a smart card. Once you have the card do you have the right kind of reader?
And once you have the right kind of reader and right kind of card then are they "paired" since you have to call the customer service phone line of some providers to pair the two together.
Throw into that the fact that Finland uses a slightly different kind of DVB signal to other countries (hence the high prices and limited choice of equipment) and then it's amazing that anyone can successfully watch channels in HD here.

I've seen some of the HDTV channels here - doesn't seem that much content in HD (just because the broadcast is in HD doesn't mean they made/bought the HD version of it). In the same way that YLE1 is in colour, it doesn't mean that every single programme is in colour.
The broadcasters here are pretty hopeless on most fronts. On friday night I noticed sub tv were showing "meet the parents" in the wrong aspect ratio, with everyone looking distinctly fat. Can't they even get that right.

It might support HD, but it does not necessarily support the reception of the (newer, more efficient in bandwidth usage) DVB-T2 broadcasts. (Digita’s “D” multiplex, which carries the YLE HD channels, is based on the new DVB-T2 modulation standard.)

You might want to check with the manual or the manufacturer’s support service whether the exact model you have has this capability. If it doesn’t, you might either want to upgrade the TV or buy an HD/DVB-T2-capable external tuner/receiver/decoder (“digibox”) for it... possibly with an integrated HDD recorder for timeshifting to make the best out of such purchase/situation.

(Since you mentioned “antenna”, I’m assuming you actually are receiving the channels via a UHF yagi antenna mounted on the roof and aimed at the nearest Digita broadcast tower instead of getting the RF signal from the local cable TV company, which is a different matter altogether.)
