Health insurance, i'm lost!

Post by Roomanny » Fri Feb 14, 2014 4:22 pm

I know there are so many topics about this already, i have been reading about it for weeks now and still i'm totally lost so i really hope someone can help me out.

I have been in Finland since august 2012, started working as an aupair and still working on the side for the same family. I met my boyfriend here and decided to move to Finland. So i have my permit papers, social security number and at the moment in search for a job (it's hard but i will get there).
Now i don't pay taxes in Holland anymore, and moves permanently here so i don't have a dutch health insurance anymore.
So i applied for my KELA card, but i didn't get it (no work, not married, for them no reason to stay in finland even though i'm here over 1,5 year and soon moving in with my boyfriend).

So no dutch health insurance = no valid european health insurance card. That with no right for a KELA card i'm not insuranced and have been paying the full price for the doctor appointment (luckily only one so far).
Did anybody have this problem? And what can i do?
Or can anybody advice me on a private health insurance where i don't need a KELA card and not pay like 4000€ a year for it?

There is a couple of contact options given at the end of this page: http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=851&langId=en

How about trying if you can get an answer from there. Even nicer if you report your experience here.

I also had a similar issue when I first moved to this country, but I acted differently from you. Not knowing if I was going to be covered by Kela or not,I didn't let the authorities in my home country that I left, just to cover my arse in case Kela wanted me to wait.So I could use the EHIC for the 6 months that I had to wait until got coverage here.Unfortunately the eurocrates in Brussels,in their pen-pusher's paradise, are very good in studying all kind of meaningless laws, but when it comes to regulate this sort of things and armonize the health coverage of EU citizen, the average Joe is left on his own and his inventive.

There are many private health insurance plans out there that will cover you while in Finland. There are plans that will provide comprehensive coverage outside your home country in Finland, and then you can choose to include coverage in your home country as well. Many plans allow you to choose your providers, and you can seek treatment at a private or public facility. Depending on the type of visa you are on, you may also need to present proof of coverage to the Finnish consulate or police station, and they need to meet the following requirements: http://www.internationalstudentinsuranc ... ements.php

Before purchasing a plan, be sure to ask if they provide you with a visa letter that you can present that shows who's covered, for how long, and what the benefits are. Some insurance plans will provide this to you via email as soon as the same day.
