Bed bugs in used mattresses?

Post by ilikepeanutbutter » Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:43 am

I am wondering does Finland have a problem with bed bugs? My mattress is pretty much toast and I'm looking into getting a used one. I just wonder if anyone has had issues with this?

Thanks!

Kat

According to an entomologist interviewed by Pohjolan Sanomat, Kaleva, and HS.fi in 2008, dust mites have very nearly gone extinct in Finland:

It's a shame it's such a mild winter otherwise you could stick a used mattress outside (on the balcony etc) for a couple of hours at -25C and you'd kill off almost everything.

Ikea has some good mattresses and they are guaranteed 10 years, (maybe some of them even longer). The last one I bought came from Jysk, also good value for money.

I seem to remember a similar report about bedbugs, but low and behold up they popped again! With so many people moving into the country, bringing their linens, pillows, and mattresses from abroad.
Yeah, I think the reports about some of the common household pests reappearing in Finland due to tourists unknowingly importing them in their luggage were about actual bed bugs (Cimex lectularius), maybe even cockroaches, not dust mites, which are generally only barely visible to the naked eye.

There has been a bed bug problem in some of the HOAS apartments:
