buying touristy stuff in Helsinki

Post by GermanAmericanLove » Mon Mar 31, 2014 8:52 am

I just got here and was wondering: Does the touristy stuff get more expensive as we get closer to summer? Should I buy my little gifts etc. now or wait? (I am thinking T-shirts, pens, moomin stuff etc.) Oh, moomin stuff: Where is the best place to buy that? It seems rather expensive...
thanks, gabriele

As a local, I've never had to think about the prices of touristy stuff here, but I do know about Moomin products.

Selection-wise, but probably not price-wise, the best place would be the official Moomin Shop in the Forum shopping center: http://www.moominshop.fi/indexeng.html

If you're looking for Moomin tableware (http://www.arabia.fi/web/Arabiawww.nsf/ ... lours_mugs --- people pay insane prices for some of those mugs if they're a limited edition!), you should check out shops like Citymarket and Anttila that have them on sale now and then (though you might need to be a member of their loyalty/rewards program, which won't be available for a non-resident). Arabia/Iittala also has an outlet store in the Arabiakeskus shopping center: http://www.arabia.fi/web/Arabiawww.nsf/en/store_locator

The Stockmann department store will also have their semiannual Hullut Päivät ("Crazy Days") sale soon. Part of their marketing hype is never announcing the dates beforehand, but all signs seem to point to April 9th - April 13th. It's a huge sale, at least if you look at the number of old ladies who will bump into you rather than the amount of money you'll actually save.
