Street dust

Post by MC Deli » Wed Apr 02, 2014 12:05 am

It is incredibly dusty in Helsinki right?

And a combination of grit dust and maybe pollen and even Sahara sand... but it is mainly the grit dust.

The numbers look off the charts http://www.hsy.fi/en/regionalinfo/airqu ... icles.aspx

But HS is reporting about pollen - what is going on here?

Where I live the streets are not cleaned/watered and I see people using blowers to get the grit out of car parks. It is usually bad for a few weeks every year but it is now, what, 6 weeks of crazy dust and my throat is f***ed... is too much grit being used, shouldn't it be better controlled?

It is pretty bad this year.

Some people are allergic to that, and the situation is probably less visually obvious.
and I see people using blowers to get the grit out of car parks.
Maybe that should be illegal, maybe it even is (haven't seen that in my neighborhood)

It is at least claimed, that most of the irritating particles actually are from the road material itself, and that the effect of spiked tires is worse than sand or other material spread on the streets. (I do not know)

So according to Helsinki city regulations, one should use water to moisturize at least and leaf blowers are explicitly banned for this purpose.

That is interesting.
I read in the HSY material about the road material.
But with my eyes I can see clouds of grit dust.
I am in Vallila today and it is crazy dusty.
I guess the officials know and hope it goes away quickly - seems off to me
