2 Questions about unemployment benefits & student status?
2 Questions about unemployment benefits & student status?
Hello,
I wanna ask about a situation, and I would appreciate your inputs:
Assume that there's a full-time employee and he is a master's degree student in the university at the same time.
Assume that this person has been laid off, and it's time to apply for benefits.
Q1) If this person has NOT told TE Office nor Kela nor anyone at all about his student status. Will anyone find out?
I mean, If this person applied for unemployment benefits and he didn't mention anything relevant to the fact that he is a student, Can the unemployment fund union or TE Office or Kela find out?
Q2) Assuming that everything has been keep in the dark, and no one knew about the person's student status, and this person started getting unemployment benefits for a few months, then, out of the blue, his student status has exposed to TE Office and Kela, Will this be considered as a crime? Any consequences?
Thank you kindly !

Yes,for one simple reason. When you enroll at the Uni you must give your Nino number, which will be checked against the nino of people claiming benefits. It doesn't work like in Glasgow here, where people in prison also claim Jobseekers' allowance ,incapacity benefit,Housing and council tax benefit and when they get out they retire and move to Benidorm.

Re: 2 Questions about unemployment benefits & student status
wow I am exactly in the same situation and I don't know what to do as well.
Since I cannot get student benefits (since I am not from Finland) but if I am unemployed I can get the unemployment benefit at least.
Although someone told me that the system is such that they don't leave you die from starvation and you get some benefits anyway.
I ended up in the conclusion that I will say it to them only if they ask me.

Student benefits are not only for Finns. You can find out if you are eligible from here:neronakos wrote:wow I am exactly in the same situation and I don't know what to do as well.

Re: 2 Questions about unemployment benefits & student status
Well its easy. answer is "no". It depends on your residence permit where it comes. Finns and EU's have only the first obstacle.
First and main issue is that a "student" and an "unemployed" are "legal statuses", not meaning you study or are without work. As far as KELA is concerned, you can only be one status, not a schrödingers student. So if you want "unemployed" you can not "student".
Second point of failure is in the RP for non-EU, If you are a student, you need to have "independent means" for renewal and enough credits. So its goodbye. If you have a RP for work, then you just hope its P as when you start dipping into the common pot and become a "public burden", its goodbye. On family reasons or being some other interesting category you go back to having to deal with 1st issue.
