English Jobs Megathread
I noticed a lack of of replies in a lot of the English speaking job posts going on. I'm pretty sure a thread where information and jobs in regions can be shared on job hunting for English speakers only would be a good addition to this forum.
A larger post should generate more views, replies and job/entrepreneurial success for the less specific job hunter.

Re: English Jobs Megathread
The key to finding a job is of course to first learn Finnish.
We can of course make a huge megathread about how stupid people are who expect to find a job without speaking the local language.
Such a discussion will of course not create any jobs for these stupid people.

Re: English Jobs Megathread
God I’m tired of hearing that old language argument every time some bitter unemployed person needs something to blame for their inability to find a job.
You don’t get a job because you can speak Finnish. A lot of people around here speak Finnish and still don’t have a job.
You need other qualifications/skills/attitude and this is often of higher importance than local language.
Tons of people work here in Finland in blissful ignorance about Finnish language.

Three times "of course" in one post. This is your favourite phrase, isn't it?GermanInHelsinki wrote:The key to finding a job is of course to first learn Finnish.

Re: English Jobs Megathread
It seems his logic is as limited as his range of vocabulary. God knows how he managed to come to the conclusion that making a thread for information on English-language jobs = 'expecting to find a job without speaking the local language'. I don't see anyone expecting anything here!

Hmmm Sami
Might one encourage you to read the whole thread and keep track of the different posters...?

GiH is mainly correct so get off his back! I like the "of course" idiom - just as I like watching South Park to hear "They've killed Kenny!"
Most people with well paid jobs that do not require Finnish were sent here. Very few firms advertise for non Finnish speakers. There are occasional firms and jobs that may not require Finnish, but i think that this will contribute to a Minorthread!
Also dodn't be fooled by an advert being in English - that can mean that Finnish is a given and they want to assess how comfortable the jobseeker is in their 2nd language.

"GiH is mainly correct so get off his back!" - No he is not
"I like the "of course" idiom " - This is not an idiom
"They've killed Kenny!" - Neither is this
"Most people with well paid jobs that do not require Finnish were sent here" - You tell your self?
"Very few firms advertise for non Finnish speakers" - Would you as a company look for people with special things they could not do?
"There are occasional firms and jobs that may not require Finnish, but i think that this will contribute to a Minorthread!" - Oh sorry but I do not know the threashold for Minor/Major thread

Your reply added nothing.
I do have a well paid job and was sent here. As were most of my professional and non-Finnish social contacts. I have personally and my company generally posted job adverts in English but requiring Finnish and I know other corporations do this. Therefore what I write is based on fact and experience. What's mega / minor - who knows - but tell me how many answers so far have addressed the OP's original question? None, so trending towards minor.
Even your petty observations do not make sense. In this context "is of course" is not literal but somewhat figurative so yes maybe a better description but not hard to understand. I didn't write that the South Park quote was an idiom. (I was merely comparing the fact that in both cases you expect something to happen and start to try to spot it.)
Perhaps concentrate on giving useful information backed by experience rather than twisting other's wording if you disagree. Even better, contribute by actually showing me to be wrong and provide links to various English Speaking jobs over and above the links already on the site.

Re: English Jobs Megathread
All have a point of view. I found his/her posts informative and fact based rather than a lot of opinion. There are a few on the forum that have special ways(one man's rude is another funny) but still impart facts. Then there are many who spout opinion without much facts and are really nice. I prefer the former.
Cannot see how something the guy puts in every post is snide. Again your opinion, though I recall he needed to correct some of your facts so perhaps you see it more personally than I.
Back to the subject - Weren't you the Oz that defended a right to come here on unemployment benefit and get free Finnish lessons? Seems that you must have seen getting a job as a non Finn speaker difficult.
You may feel that your experiences somehow trump mine - I have a wide network who are admittedly on the professional side, but this means that my experience is valid to the question in hand on both sides of the fence (getting and offering jobs). No-one is doubting that many more come to Finland for family reasons but that doesn't add to OP's question. Also one of the most popular subjects is how they struggle to get jobs without langauge. Also even if you disagree with my experience or GiH, I think most of those with real experience say the same.

Well its practically the same if you flip the coin. Try finding a job in England/Canada/USA without speaking English.

Condescension may feel good to the writer but does not come across as overly professional and "objective", whether you claim you see it less personally or not. The topics that I have a closer knowledge in, GiH was not only quite arrogant to my ear as well but also pretty far off where the facts were concerned. And yes, I prefer the rough facts, even the rough opinions, over sweet-talk too.Liam1 wrote: Cannot see how something the guy puts in every post is snide. As you said, everyone has a point of view, quite literally. I like to read both your opinions, especially on such a thread. Reality is huge, and while there may be "true" and "false" answers in things like law, taxes etc. such questions as the topic of this thread are not those. I have no doubt that your experience is huge. I have also no doubt that your experience does NOT encompass ALL of Finland, ALL of Finnish employers. Should it be that huge against my impression, please do go save the world alreadyLiam1 wrote: You may feel that your experiences somehow trump mine - I have a wide network who are admittedly on the professional side, but this means that my experience is valid to the question in hand on both sides of the fence (getting and offering jobs). In the few months that I am resident in Finland I have met 2 people with about the first 2-3 chapters of your average textbook worth of Finnish, and a job. There are some German speaking ones farther north (a LOT farther north) who managed the same "miracle". I did not test their English, do not have links, and did not conduct any interviews. I have enough "real experience" for my taste to know that it IS possible. I suspect that it is quite like finding the needle in the haystack, needing a lot of luck indeed. I do happen to like to speak with people who drive taxis, clean floors, cut hairs, and such jobs though. They have a LOT of worthwhile information a bisnismän may not easily get to (except he shares the same liking
