Confusing situation regarding moving

Post by Jellix » Thu Jul 24, 2014 5:25 pm

Hey,
I'm from the UK and planned to move to Finland. I am going to be living with one of my best friends who will be studying whilst I work for a year, and then myself study. My friend applied for accommodation however they want a SSN/PIN. My friend said that I should be able to use my NI number however it turns out that is not the case.

Currently I have a large amount of savings that I can sustain myself for the best part of a year with careful budgeting without a job, however I am actively seeking a job, and moving there would also make it easier, especially if I am given an offer where they would like me to start immediately. What can I do about the SSN/PIN issue, as from my own research it seems I have to go to Finland with my passport and a European Cert. which certifies I am allowed to live in Europe. Is there any plac I can apply online for a temporary number, so that we may register this accommodation, or will I be looking at seeking a temporary living space while I go through said application process at the Maistraati.

Thanks.

You should of course tell where the number was needed when applying for an apartment. Usually this is for checking your credit history, and without a Finnish credit history you are of course anyway pretty much the last person considered for an apartment in the private market. Having a SSN will of course not help you with that.

Anna did of course fail to mention that it is normal in the Finnish housing market that the tenant pays one month rent plus two months deposit before he gets the key for the apartment.

Hoping to find a job within less than a year without speaking the local language is of course very optimistic. Outside the Helsinki region nearly impossible. What do you plan to do when you run out of money before you find a job?

It would of course make more sense if you would continue to work in the UK and not move before you got a job - finding a place to sleep for a few weeks is much easier than finding a job.

In documents dealing with the trade register, the instructions usually say to write down the birth date if no Finnish personal identity code exists. It would help if you shared, who you are applying from for the accommodation. You should aim to find out what they need the identity code for. If it's for the negative credit history like GermanInHelsinki said, then you might be able to satisfy them otherwise with UK documentation. You will also need to be in Finland to sign the lease so you can let the landlord know that you will be acquiring the identity code before signing the lease.

It's not possible to do online since they will want to see your original identification documents.
