Does anybody know berry picking started? I'm interesting in (blueberries, cranberries, cloudberries).
Thanks for answers!

I have been picking blueberries for a couple of weeks already. Picked three more litres this afternoon. Can't find any cloudberries though (lots of leaves but no sign of berries) and I have no idea where to look for cranberries. I have also picked a lot of wild raspberries, in southern Uusimaa (Raasepori).maximusbym wrote:Hello!

In where? where i live local K supermarket buys berries, fishes etc around a year (under different company and name but same owner tho) and few businesses come in here in autumn to buy berries. It is virtually impossible to not see their adverts or trucks.Kayttaja1 wrote:As a finn I would like to know where you can find a contractor or a company who buys your berries. I know I could sell the berries at the market or straight to the customers, but it would be logistical and economical disaster.
In southern Finland, Kanta-Häme. I know in northern Finland it's easier to find businesses to buy berries than in south.onkko wrote:In where? where i live local K supermarket buys berries, fishes etc around a year (under different company and name but same owner tho) and few businesses come in here in autumn to buy berries. (season mid June - end of July, depending on the weather)
^^^ Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.Rosamunda wrote:http://yle.fi/uutiset/southern_european ... ds/6149757
Suonenjoki is the main strawberry growing region. Strawberries are grown in other areas too, but mostly in southern/central Finland. In the article I linked to they give a few details about work permits (eg for workers from non-EU countries).
Well I was always imagining you're outside on the cold, rain standing all day and picking. That's how I thought it looks like.Rosamunda wrote:Really hard? Down here, around the Salo area, the pickers are lying face down, in a row of 5-6 on a motor-driven cart, under a canopy (ie in the shade). Hardly a back-breaking job! And it only lasts for a few weeks. I can think of many many things which are much more physically demanding. Like standing on your feet teaching a class of small children all day, or sheep shearing, or coal mining...
Thank you so much Rosamunda, that site looks great. Will try to send them en email and to apply online.Rosamunda wrote:This farm has a good website explaining how it all works - but apparently they don't have the motorised picking carts.

I wish I had taken a photo of the locals picking strawberries this summer - I had never seen those carts before but they looked really efficient and so much easier on the back.
There are also nurseries that employ foreigners during the summer, usually for longer periods that the strawberry farms. I think the work is probably harder since it lasts all day (strawberry picking is usually early morning or evening work) and involves weeding and things like that. These people employ quite a lot of seasonal labour: http://tahvoset.fi/tahvoset/3915-2/toihin-meille/
