Traveling With Residence Permit

Traveling With Residence Permit

Hello everyone,

Here is my situation, I am here in Finland for a work assignment for one year. So, I got my residence permit for one year. Last week I submitted my passport for UK visa and they said it might take a week or two.

Now the question is: I want to go to Tallinn with some friends this weekend but I have only my Finnish residence permit with me since my passport is with UK embassy. Is that possible or I should wait for my passport to travel to Estonia?

Thanks for your help
:D

They won't let you on the ferry. No passport = no travel. Or, they might let you on the ferry, then in Tallinn they get interested and you find yourself in an Estonian jail...

You reside with residence document and travel with travel document. Latter being passport or ID if Schengen citizen within Schengen area.

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

It's quite likely the OP will get on the ferry. For example, last time we travelled with Tallink only the id of the person making the reservation was asked (and there are also machines but the queue for them was longer). As pointed out already, even if it's not systematically checked, you are required to be in possession of a travel document.

True, I've traveled couple of times and no one check for ID or passport. But as you said, it's better to wait for my passport.

I'd say go for it, and whatever happens do let us know. Estonian jail might not be that bad actually. You'll most likely end up cleaning soviet nucular waste which doesn't sound that bad either. Who knows, you'll become a Hulk or SpiderMan?

This question has been asked a couple of times, and someone has to be a guinea pig for the sake of future generations

hahaha

i like the idea to become hulk  but i hate to be a "spider" man :P

Sorry didn't know that this question was asked before.. but good to ask again.. kinda of refresh

I would rather wait for "the one" who will be brave enough and try it

Oh, and it was just in the newspaper that Obama is visiting Estonia, and they've re-established border checks. Not a good time to "think"...

Yes. So instead of "possible risk" it has been upgraded to "guaranteed failure" category between August 31st - September 3rd.

hey everyone,

I got a copy of my passport and got it signed and stamped from my Embassy. So it's kinda of official ID tell I get my passport back. However, I went to Viking lines office and asked them about this situation. They told me that it can't be done because of the restricted check on Estonia borders these days. Also, they said even during normal days and if i got caught, I would risk 800 euros fine and a possible of a one year jail

So advice to me and everyone else in my situation, always take your passport whenever you travel between two countries. 8)
