Finland plans large-sclae military drill

Post by Alex.Sm » Sat Aug 30, 2014 6:44 pm

Hi,

Just read an article about Finland planning a large-scale exercise next year: http://yle.fi/uutiset/finland_plans_lar ... er/7443126

They say that 8.000 reservists will go to this training.
- does this mean the reservists whom have already done the military training right?
- soo as I am a reservist, will I go to this training?
- how do they select the people to go there?
- if you are selected what will happen with the job? (if I recall at some point I read somewhere that doing the drill is not a reason to be fired so they will keep your job.)
- how long these kind of drills last?
- can I volunteer for this? and if I volunteer and I will go, what will happen with the job?
- what about payment? do you still get salary from the company where you work or they pay you some % out of your salary, or Kela pay's you or what happens? (I have a mortgage  )

If this will not cause financial issues for my family, I'm good to go, military drills are always nice

P.S. I have done the military service in my former home country and when I got the citizenship I was exempt of military service on peace time.

They won't call you, but you ask some interesting other questions.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Well, its for those who are in the reserve from the Finnish army and are in a "wartime formation". So usually a lot of the HQ/MP/communications/medics/artillery/engineers get called up, generally, if you are a "specialist" the chances are you get called. You get a letter in the mail usually 6months before, as in an official mobilization notice - you take it to your boss/hr and the boss says "perkele". The pay works so that the company pays a % and the government a %. So then you show up at a school or somesuch on a Saturday, depending where/what you are. You get a doctor's checkup, you get kitted out, your own clothes get put in the gym bag you brought, and then you end up on a truck bed to go receive your "bride" at a depot. Usually your platoon has a few "faces you know" from the time, but it depends. Once you get into the forest you set up tents, usual crap, mine the perimeter, set watches and wait. At some point and time you are explained the "scenario" whether you are the "blues" or the "yellows" and then depending you get training excercizes or "larp-sessions". Usually in big war games you get reservists and active service mingled up, and you try not to look too sharp, just because you can. The scennario is usually a deteriorating conflict so from the week you spend in the forest maybe 3 last days you're on 2hours sleep and your "larp scenarios" get !"#¤%. A bit like in video games, you get "wounded" or "killed" and need to be taken to the medics/ m.a.s.h where you "respawn" as a "fresh replacement"... So after a week you usually get saved by the armoured cavalry and get demobbed. Unload the bride, any paraphernalia, dekitted, change into your own clothes, medical checkup...

Since you have not done the training in the Finnish army you are of course not a reservist in the Finnish army.

According to the Conscription Act we are auxiliary reservists

Section 2:

Military service
Every male Finnish citizen is liable for military service starting from the beginning of
the year in which he turns 18 years old until the end of the year in which he turns 60,
unless otherwise provided for herein.

Fulfilment of military service includes service as a conscript, participation in reservist
training, extra service, and service during mobilization, in addition to participation in
call-ups and examinations assessing fitness for military service.

Persons liable for military service are in active military service, in the reserves or in
the auxiliary reserves.

The legal rights of a person liable for military service may not, pursuant to this Act, be
limited beyond what is necessary for his performing of military service, the mainte-
nance of military order and measures that are necessary to ensure the safety of the per-
sons liable for military service and other persons

Section 49:

Membership in the reserve or auxiliary reserve

After persons liable for military service complete their military service, they become
members of the reserve:
1) until the end of the year in which they turn 50 years of age, in the case of the rank and file,
2) until the end of the year in which they turn 60 years of age, in the case of officers, non-commissioned officers, and warrant officers,
3) as long as they are fit for service, in the case of an officer of the rank of Colonel, Captain (Navy) or higher.

Persons liable for military service belong to the auxiliary reserve if:
1) they have not completed military service,
2) no longer belong to the reserve, or
3) have been exempted from service in peacetime

Soo if Finland will be at war we the auxiliary reservists we will not watch the war live on TV but we will have "first row seats" with all the good stuff included: 3D glasses to get the image real and clear like we will be there, warm popcorn and ice-cold coke. Just for the effect to be total! 8)

I have two reservists who are currently full-time students (my "baby" will start his military service next summer, so he's not affected). It's a pain if they have JUST started a summer job and have to take a week off. In fact, it might even make it harder for them to get a summer job.

Get the drill started , bring it on very set and would be willing to partake, it is fun experienced it 13 years ago under a +36 up to 40 degrees temperature sweating underneath my pants over tanning my already chocolate skin, but I did not feel lonely and bored because we have enrolled female corpers in the camp/platoons/drill, and you can both excuse yourself with any when nature calls. We were all young and full of life and need each others company then.

If you are finnish citizen then you are reservist, regardless of gender or anything.
By law, if !"#¤% hits a big fan, every single one who has finnish passport can and will be ordered to do their duty and that includes everything. From knitting a sock to front lines. What goverment sees is good.

Of course there is front line reserves who will be called first but everyone is called if needed.

I'll guess everybody will have to contribute somehow! What about if everybody will declare themselves as pacifists or as Jehovah's witness member will that mean nobody will go to war to defend the country?

In a war situation there are many needs not just front-line therefore maybe the pacifists can do something else to support the troops!

AKA decoys to protect the actual soldiers.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.
