Bit of a weird question: I've heard from an astronomer friend that tonight, due to solar activity, there could be a good chance of Northern Lights even as far south as France. However, leaving aside the fact that it's cloudy right now, Helsinki has horrendous light pollution.
So I was wondering what could be a good place for dark skies near Helsinki, that is accessible by public transport. I've heard Nuksio mentioned, but you can probably only get there during the day. Any suggestions?

Re: Dark skies near Helsinki
I've just come back from a Nuuksio midnight quick visit, also for aurora hunting purpose. No solar activity so far has been spotted, but the starry sky is quite awesome too. I was in rush so forgot to bring the tripod, but I still managed to get some pretty decent night pictures.
Unfortunately all the main road in Nuuksio park is lit up by street light, so it's hard to find a complete quiet and dark spot to observe the sky. I had to drive to Haukalamppi entry point to get the ideal condition. It was a little thrill for me to drive alone in the forest at the midnight.
If anyone here know good spot in Uusima region for a sky starring guy like me, please share

Glad to hear about Nuuksio, although without a car it gets a bit complicated. My dream would be a remote train or bus stop in the middle of nowhere.

He is propably right, as the weather in Glasgow was crap last few nights, and it is always crap when I want to look up some nice astronomical phenomena such as northern lights, moon eclipse or meteor showerinfinite_jest wrote:Bit of a weird question: I've heard from an astronomer friend that tonight, due to solar activity, there could be a good chance of Northern Lights even as far south as France.
