Any Finnish university to study medicine in English?

Post by GoFinland » Sun Sep 14, 2014 8:50 pm

Do any of you know any university where I can study medicine in English but in Finland?
I've got my CAE (C1 level in English), although i know I don't deserve it :P
But yes, I'm really interested in studying in Finland but in English just because my level of Finnish is like a B1, and I'm about to go to the university!
So I don't have time to get the C2 they're requiring in the University of Helsinki, and I don't really know any other one.
And I want to remark that I don't want to go there because of the free education, but to make a new life in Finland because I love the country itself.
Kiitos paljon ja moikka! :ochesey:

How do you plan to communicate with your patients then? A doctor that only speaks English is not a cute novelty thing, but a problem unless the patient is superfluent (and he/she should not be required to be). You won't even be able to use the patient journal system... I think you need a plan B.

You said in an earlier post that you are a heart Surgeon from Spain. What further medical studying are you hoping to do? If you are already practicing in Spain, your education is accepted in Finland.

Maybe he/she is thinking of learning Finnish while he/she studies medicine? Heck, they will have about 6 years to learn it in! He/she said they already have B1 in Finnish, to practice as a doctor you need B2, so it's nt a huge jump...

I think you need to have C2 to practice as a doctor. I am close to C1 and I know that I cannot possibly practice as a medical doctor.

No chance. You need practically perfect English in any country in which you wish to study Medicine in English. Otherwise you have to have a native command of whatever language you are studying medicine in.
Also, Medicine in Finland is probably the most competitive subject to get into. People study their whole lives and fight to get in.

Short answer: No
Long answer: No way

We have had our fair share of phony doctors here already that I always ask first where he/she got his/her degree from. If it is from the same university that gave Donald Trump a doctorate title for his golfcourse, I know enough

If he has got medical degree from Spain, that is recognized, following Eu rules, as valid here. In practice it is likely impossible to work here without knowing at least one of the local languages (almost anywhere, Finnish), but if that is the case, it is the language, not medicine, he'd need to study.

EU is magical and makes the light to shine out of the ass. You get both certified and you don't have to speak Swedish. You don't need to pass a Finnish test either, but you wont find much in jobs either. But yes, you get "licensed"

I know a Finn who recently qualified as a Dr. When she was applying for a study place she was willing (and able) to study in Finnish, Swedish or English, in that priority order. Competition is tough and she didn't get a place on a Finnish-speaking course, but was able to find a place on a Swedish-speaking course. If she had had to study in English she would have done so in in the USA. There was (at that time at least) no option to study medicine in English in Finland.
