Finding a website where clients rate lawyers

Post by Greg Kite » Sat Sep 27, 2014 2:20 am

Does anybody know of a website in Finland where I can find out how people rate lawyers that they have used? There MUST be something like this, but I can't find it anywhere.

Ehmm...no? Why SHOULD there be something like this? I mean rating professional scientists like doctors, for example, by the mere uneducated masses. Don't get me wrong there. It would be quite a responsibility for someone to put out on the internets something like this. It is not the same as rating a Hesburger or Kebab place.

Now, to help you with the question you really should be asking: I believe there is a listing of all lawyers operating in your area. Just do your homework and look up on each lawyer. I think you really need to check specializations. Most (especially the younger ones) will have a LinkedIn profile. Almost all of them will have a personal web page in the site of the firm they work for or own. A few might even have a wikipedia.fi lemma (judging from Estonia, that is). This may be too much work, but if you want to do a proper research you shouldn't be lazy. Otherwise, what did you expect? Going to Facebook and picking the one with the most 'likes'?

So you'd end up with one that chooses his clients well and don't take cases that s/he can't win.

I'm aware of similar websites to rate physicians, professors, and therapists (outside Finland, though)[1][2]. I think it's very plausible that such site might exist for lawyers, but I honestly doubt you'll find one for Finland. Personally, I have seen a lacking in the Finnish mentality of something like this. People here seems to prefer nagging and complaining about issues between each other and in forums rather than filing actual complaints or contacting officials. Of course, there are some cases where people do that, but I've seen it's not really the norm.

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

First off, Thanks to Adnan for posting the interesting links, and your reasoned response.

Second, to Anan, no thanks to you for your idiotic response. I think there is a lot to be said for the collective opinion of the (as you so patronizingly put it) 'uneducated masses'...as opposed to, say, some of the narrow opinions of the 'uneducated asses' (read: you) I read on these posts. These types of websites certainly do exist, and they certainly do provide some value (see Adnan's links, Angie's list, etc.). Of course you have to approach them with some degree of skepticism, but - just as in research - the bigger the sample size, the more solid the conclusions you can reach. I find it totally surprising that they don't exist in Finland.

And what good could I possibly get from looking at the lawyers' websites and Linkedin pages? Do you think they themselves are going to objectively report their good/bad qualities? Think it through for more than five seconds. Better to look at the opinions of the people who have experience, read what they have to say (maybe contact them if they allow it?) and form a reasoned opinion with all the information you have.

Your response could not have been less helpful or idiotic.

Well, the thing is - in Finland you very seldom need/use a lawyer. At least one you go and find and pay yourself. As long as they are on the "advocate union list" and haven't lost their rights to practice they should be allright. Also, when you go to the union pages, you get to see what the lawyers specialize on (not much use hiring one for dry rot if their forte is family law).

Usually you are a criminal or filthy rich if you "have a lawyer" and those people don't really flaunt their experiences. And family law usually the cases are too private. So I would find it totally surprising if there was such a site... Maybe in the TORweb with the young generation of dope pushers.

What Adnan said doesn't contradict with what I said. You mentioned Finland and lawyers. If you manage to find this kind of site I would be glad to know. I was just giving you reasons why a site like this couldn't probably exist for a country like Finland. (Since you are still 'surprised').

If you think you really can't get any information at all by looking at a professional's profile, well sorry. Maybe my response wouldn't be helpful from the start, since you seem to be lacking basic judgement skills, otherwise you wouldn't try to evaluate professionals from Google. Good luck with your further search. And chill out a bit.

Atass,

First, your initial response did differ from Adnan's...in both the completely unhelpful content and its irritating, fingers-screeching-the-chalkboard tone. Second, of course I go to the lawyer sites for specifics, but I want to hear what other people's experiences are. What part of this is difficult for you to understand? You're really not too quick on the uptake. Third, how is that you can conclude that I 'lack basic judgment skills'? Instead of believing what the lawyers themselves say (your brilliant advice), I want to dig deeper and find out what other people say. Fourth, who said anything about me trying to evaluate professionals using Google? This is something you pulled straight from your crap-advice-giving ass. Fifth, if you want me to 'chill out' then write something that shows a modicum of intelligence. You are clearly not the brightest bulb on the tree, so I don't want to hear from you anymore. You're as irritating as you are socially inept.
