Buying car

Post by aguy » Sat Sep 27, 2014 12:45 pm

Hei,

Can somebody explain what is the process when you buy a car (from private person or from company) to make all the administrative documents to get the car on your name, insurance and so forth?

What are the offices you have to go to, forms, documents, etc!

Your answer will be appreciated!

Kiitos!

Basically, you need to get an insurance and go to Katsastus. Insurance is easiest to get through your bank/the guys you have your homeowners insurance as they already "know" you. You can do it online as well, need to have the car details at hand. When you go to Katsastus you need to have both part 1 and part 2 thats the title transfer an then they'll ring up your insurance an you exchange pecuniary elements and get part 1 and part 2 in your name. Part 1 you keep in the car and part 2 you keep safe. You have a 7-day grace period to get this done.

Only snags are if the previous owner hasn't paid the road tax or the car isn't inspected or theres something else funny with the papers. In that case walk away. You don't want to deal with unregistered/in someone elses name/uninsured cars. Yes, so the person selling is the person in the title thats important. Road tax may be a few days short and I think these days you can pay it straight off at Katsastus (befoer you needed to go to the bank and then come back)... Just make sure you live where you live, as all the paperwork is going to the address "in the computer" and they won't change official addresses. You need to change it in the computer, as in Maistraatti. Not paying road tax because you never got the bill is not an excuse not to pay, and the police got license plate scanners so they get you for no tax or not inspected on the fly.

Hum... Thats about it really. As for insurance, theres mandatory road and then kasko. Unless its a new-new car you generally just take the moose-fire-theft part kasko and keep your liability high. Moose insurance isn't anything to laugh about, only an idiot wouldn't have one - and yes, even in Helsinki.
