Getting accepted into masters question

Post by arescec » Wed Oct 15, 2014 2:25 pm

Hello there,

So I am having a dillema: should I even apply for a masters in computer science if I have average grades of 3.428/5?
In the country where I live (Croatia) everyone gets accepted into masters since there aren't many students so I kind of messed up my grades. Third year of bachelors average will be around 4.6/5, but that doesn't matter since application is sent way before the end of last academic year.

So here is my question, is it even worth it applying for a masters in computer science or any other field for that matter with grades like that?
Thank you in advance for your answer.

So does anyone have ANY info on how hard it is to get admitted? It doesn't have to be master's in computer science, if you have been accepted or know someone, please share some info.

I think the entrance test points is the one you need to be worrying about.

Unless you're trying to get into a highly-esteemed Masters program, then don't worry about your grades and just focus on the entrance exam. If all fails, you still have Vaasa University. They accept everybody over there.

Luckily, I'm not there. That is not to say that my degree is from a better place. Sadly, throughout the last 3 years, I've worked with a several people with degrees from Vaasa's education institutions. Let's just say they had a few things in common.

Generally speaking, VY and VAMK have very low standards. I've seen atrocious Master's theses being accepted to doctoral programs. Similarly, awful and talentless students with bad grades and the most unoriginal Bachelor's theses you can imagine getting into Master's programs in VAMK and VY (but mostly VY, they're !"#¤%).

Thank you guys on your relplies, I was already at the brink of deciding against even trying with my grades. Here in Croatia quotes for Master's never even get filled so nobody is trying to get good grades, just to pass, and education is ... ugh ... worse than you would probably think possible. And how hard is it go get student housing, does that depend on grades?

Bachelor in Finland is a bit more.. umm.. regulated, if that's the correct word. Applying for universities of applied science is usually central, and there's one exam for 90% of the universities that you have to take only once.
Masters, on the other hand, is slightly more complicated. You'd have to directly contact the university and check their entrance requirements. Some require 1-2 years of work experience, others require 3. Some require an exam, others don't. Some require certain grade on some language test, some require lower grades.
Your best bet is to check the programs you like and email the universities and ask them.

There's no student housing like other countries. Student housing in Finland is basically a company subsidised by the government to provide housing to students. They're not affiliated with universities. The only thing they care about is that you're a student. Please check this website for more info http://studyinfinland.fi/

I think its the other way around, in student housing if your neighbours party too much that might affect your grades

I think in Finland your thesis grade might have some value, buy only if you apply for something. Otherwise you have a degree is you have a degree. You don't even get "grades" in a "real university".
