Nothing against fiction (or shampoo bottles, for that matter). It can be one major source of knowledge, and the fun part is probably a given there

It is just that I am really impressed by the sheer number of really good non-fiction for ALL ages at least in Helsinki, and Ivalo Library. After few weeks in Finland I was prompted to learn things body, illness, health-care center etc. To help with that, I thought to get a book or 2 for children about body stuff. Right. A book or 2. The number of books I could choose from was staggering, there simply is something for everyone. I was crazy proud to completely understand Pikku Lääkäri directed at about 4 year olds :) And I swear, after that book, a kid knows quite a bit more than precious many grown ups in other so called civilized countries.

Also, it is not just the books. Each of those public libraries, that I have seen so far, has furniture, where kids feel well, where they are met on their grounds. It is a place to meet, to hear stories, to solve puzzles, to learn in a playful, and fun way. Everyone talking of life long learning should really come here, and see how the foundation for that is built properly. Just my opinion. I guess, so far, school does a good enough job to not destroy that positive attitude towards learning. Unfortunately, saving money short term seems to be getting more and more important, here too.
