I need answers for these questions please.
I would like to continue studying my bachelor's degree in International Business or IT in English because I have a great interest to continue my education in Finland, but there are some questions that kept me confused:
Do Universities of Applied Science in Finland accept international students with a grade between 86%-92%? or do they look for top, top marks?
I heard that the application period begins on Jan 7 till Jan 25 in most of the Universities, if that is true, can I apply BEFORE I finish my last year of high school? since here, in the UAE, we finish on June-July of 2015.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Nawzat

Re: I need answers for these questions please.
What is 86%-92%? I probably would get 130% on nowherestans place of higher learning, i probably would fail few times in how to build hut before i learn proper manor/straw/mud relation tho.... And not even get admitted in Harward to get any percentage.Nawzat wrote: Do Universities of Applied Science in Finland accept international students with a grade between 86%-92%? or do they look for top, top marks?
They will test you and when you are foreigner with "dunno what this mean" papers thats what important.
You probably can apply before but you have to have papers if you are selected. Ask directly from school.

Alright, let's start.
First of all, with Finnish Universities of Applied Science (UAS), you don't really need to worry about your highschool grades. No, they don't ask for "top top marks" because mostly they have low standards. They look only at the entrance exam result.
As for applying before Finishing, there's a big problem with that. You need to have your papers (highschool diploma) by the end of February. So you'll probably miss the application period.
In Finland, applying to a UAS happens centrally. Read every single page on this website to learn more http://studyinfinland.fi/

Where i can go to school to get a druck driver license (CE) in Kuopio? Moving there soon

Re: I need answers for these questions please.
Why are you saying Finland university of applied sciences mostly do have low standard? Didn't they form part of the reasons why Finnish educational system is ranked among the top in the world? Are you not seeing graduates from these applied universities excelling in their careers around the world? Is it because they are not rapped in a box or package and been branded as the likes of Harvard universities and so forth?adnan wrote:Alright, let's start.

It is high time we wake up from our slumber and know that not all that glitters is gold, and Finland have what it takes to compete with the world over and, as such all hands must be on deck to market our beloved country Finland globally.

The reason Finnish educational system is ranked high has little do with our tertiary education. The praise is focused on the primary education.Nimi wrote: Why are you saying Finland university of applied sciences mostly do have low standard? I disagree ! The educational system of a country is measured, analyzed, compared and ranked based on the overall performance of the functional areas of the countries education, else finland would not be ranked 5th . Some cases cognitive skills and educational attainments are also measured.betelgeuse wrote:The reason Finnish educational system is ranked high has little do with our tertiary education. The global educational rankings include higher education and international school tests. The only thing is Finland has slump down from 1st to 5th position as well as other Nordic countries, that does not mean Applied universities in Finland is of low standards.

What ranking do you refer to? For example the PISA test that Finland does well in, is given to 15 year olds:Nimi wrote: I disagree ! You understood something I didn't say. Please read the sentence in context. I said that he doesn't need to worry about his highschool grades because AMKs have low standards (low selection criteria) and they don't really look at the highschool grades. I didn't talk about the quality of education.Nimi wrote:Why are you saying Finland university of applied sciences mostly do have low standard? Now you're just straw-manning me.Nimi wrote:Is it because they are not rapped in a box or package and been branded as the likes of Harvard universities and so forth?

The only thing for tertiary level in the that ranking is the graduation rate. Hardly a comprehensive metric for UAS education (tertiary level also includes universities).Based on this set of questions, the EIU chose objective quantitative indicators, grouping them into two groups: cognitive skills and educational attainment. For cognitive skills, the Index uses the latest reading, maths and science scores from PISA (Grade 8 level), TIMSS (Grade 4 andand PIRLS (Grade 4). For educational attainment, the Index uses the latest literacy rate and graduation rates at the upper secondary and tertiary level.

Nope, nope, and nope. Buddy you're absolutely wrong. The Pearsons Ranking Index (where Finland is 5th) uses the following indicators PISA, TIMSS, and PIRLS [1]. In addition to literacy and graduation rates [1]. I'm a big fan of reasonable and logical arguments, so let's start with them one by one.I am refering to pearson/Economist intelligence unit.
PISA uses test data of 15 year olds [2]. TIMSS and PIRLS use assessment data of 4th and 8th graders (10 and 14 year old) [3][4]. None of that even remotely touches universities or AMKs. Then you have literacy rate, which is the number of people who can read and write, and Finland ranks very high on that, which is pretty nice, but still doesn't come close to universities or AMKs. The only indicator that is somehow close to universities and AMKs is graduation rate, but still has little to do with the quality of education.
Another ranking that is usually referenced is the Education Index as part of the HDI report released by the UN, which ranks Finland pretty high [5]. However, one look at how it's calculated and you'll see how it doesn't have anything to do with the quality of education. It's calculated using mean years of schooling index and the expected years of schooling index[6].
So in the end you'll see that none of these ranks have anything to do with the quality of education provided by AMKs. I have a lot of anecdotes and personal experience showing me how much AMK students generally suck when it comes to the disparity between what they learned and what exists in the current real world. Most the AMK students that I met generally lack critical thinking skills, and (in IT) algorithmic thinking. Those things are the first things that need to be taught and developed in tertiary education.
(Note: I'm aware that there are indeed bright students in these institutions, but that rarely has anything to do with the institution itself)
