Reputation of universities

Post by freewolf » Thu Nov 27, 2014 5:27 pm

Hello,

I'm preparing to apply to some Finnish universities. I've checked some websites about school reputations and Turku, Oulu, Jyvaskyla, and Lappeenranta all looks decent, depending on where you look.

I wanted to learn about the local reputations of these universities. How are these universities regarded by Finns?

Thank you

Good topic, I also wanted to know the position of JAMK University of Applied Sciences weather if it' degrees are approved internationally or not. Though, if I'm going to enroll, I'm going to study in English as my Finnish is zero.

Who said that ? Legally as I read in Finland they're the same under the law of Finland. However, in some countries they're treated as lower institutions than traditional universities. That's what I know.

At least when in secondary school me and my friends considered UAS a secondary option when a similar program was available in the universities. The situation is not as clear cut for foreigners since bachelors is not available in English in the universities.

It's true bachelor programs are very limited to international business and nursing. But again, as I read in Finland according to Wikipedia it could be wrong I don't know, they're both equivalent. But if you're a citizen I have questions for you: do the majority of people prefer traditional universities or polytechnic and why ? By the way Finland has more polytechnics than traditional universities, why ?

"Real" universities are preferred. But you have to remember that you didn't do bachelors in university nor masters in UAS. UAS masters and bachelors in the technical fields in uni are newfangled things

In 2013 38600 people started in polytechnics:

The equivalent number for universities 26 326. Although we do have many regional universities (too many in my opinion), I think for polytechnics it's fine to have smaller units around the country.

A uni masters is considered a higher degree than a polytechnic bachelor.
A uni bachelor is considered a drop out.
