Book Depository - Beware!

Post by harryc » Tue Dec 02, 2014 12:01 pm

As we know Amazon UK has stopped Free Delivery to Finland.

At the same time the delivery prices went sky-high.

Book Depository has looked like an alternative and is in many cases. (Many don't know BD is actually owned by AZ).

But just now I ordered a Lego Encyclopedia - from BD - €20.32 - 'free' (ha) delivery.

Just curious - I looked at AzUK - it was £5!! But delivery £8 - nevertheless total was less than BD.

It happened that I also ordered some other Lego thing from BD - It turned out Az price much cheaper and combined delivery onlly added £1 from AZ - so if you are ordering more than one item you may well do very much better with Az.

So when ordering books and such items - it pays to do a few minutes more work and do some calculations - it also doesn't pay to let Az convert to Euro.

(One other problem with BD: cancellation difficult - it's required a separate email - which may or may not work).

I always check Amazon and Book Depository prices before ordering and usually the Book Depository is cheaper. But not always.

The reason I generally prefer the Book Depository is that the books are delivered into my post box whereas with Amazon I always have to pick them up from the Post Office (the queues are crazy this time of year). Recently the Book Depository has been quicker to deliver than Amazon, but that also varies and I'm pretty sure Itella is responsible for many of the delays (even though they denied it last time I made a complaint).

Just wondering - isn't there usually a 3 cm thickness limit on what Post (what's Itella? :-) ) carries around to houses? Maybe you only order thin books from BD?

That's the general rule - I get books into Erottaja area/Hki - the postman says that while there's a 3 cm limit - they are encouraged to take along larger packages if they have room in their orange baby stroller.

Anyhow - I haven't found any difference between AZ and BD on that score - sometimes PO - sometimes to the address - if over 3 cm.

If you live out more in the sticks (like I do) then more likely the nice postman will try to deliver the package, whatever the size as they drive around in their van.
