just out of interest, is there a crime of perverting the course of justice in Finland ? i.e. if you lie to the police, is it a crime and is it a serious penalty ?

it's a fairly big thing in the UK, and e.g. chris huhne.

potentially a witness - it depends what the original poster does

Witness has to tell the truth, unless jail is better option. Suspect can tell stories and lie. You don't have to witness against close relative, but you have to express it clearly, not lie nor just stay silent.
