The dates on a student residence permit
Hi all,
90
I just was issued my residence permit to study at Novia UAS. The dates of the permit are 01.02 - 22.06.2015. Is it permissible to enter Finland before February 1? I have been trying to find the exact rules on various FAQs from migri and such. Can I enter Finland on the grounds of a 90 day tourist visa (my American passport) before the dates on my student residence permit? Or can I not enter the country until February 1? Thanks for helping me clear this up.

With other rules respected (90 days out of 180), you can come to Finland as a tourist and stay until your RP is active.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Schengen rules only apply when there's an intention to leave:adnan wrote:With other rules respected (90 days out of 180), you can come to Finland as a tourist and stay until your RP is active.

"Kolmannen maan kansalaisen maahantuloedellytyksistä jäsenvaltioiden alueella oleskeluun, jonka on tarkoitus kestää enintään 90 päivää minkä hyvänsä 180 päivän jakson aikana, säädetään Schengenin rajasäännöstössä."
My quick read of the rules does not clearly say that early arrival would be allowed. However, in practice I don't think they will care.
Re: The dates on a student residence permit
As a US citizen, you do not require visa to enter and stay for 90 days. Yes you can enter early and your resident permit will be effective once reach the dates mentioned.
By the way the semester starts first week of January not in February.
You must have had visited Novia for entry test that made you reach to this stage - admission granted - Did you found entry clearance difficult.
Still in doubt then cut your note and /paste in email to the concerned consulate - they will guide you - yes - no

So the question is - why only for 5 months? Are you on some sort of exchange? As otherwise you're "dead meat" in limbo before the next one which you probably need to apply for before you get the credits marked on your report extract.

What is your source for this information?caster wrote:As a US citizen, you do not require visa to enter and stay for 90 days. Yes you can enter early and your resident permit will be effective once reach the dates mentioned.

Yes, you misunderstood the question. Now let's move on.

How did I misunderstand the question of the OP?adnan wrote:Here you go: http://travel.state.gov/content/passpor ... sheet.htmlbetelgeuse wrote: What is your source for this information?
Yes, you misunderstood the question. Now let's move on.
Your link says: "Entry into any of the 26 European countries in the Schengen area for short-term tourism, a business trip, or in transit to a non-Schengen destination"
The OP does not fit any of these categories. The Schengen Borders Code is available here:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/ ... ERV:l14514
The EU side of the legislation agrees with the Finnish Aliens Act:
"For stays not exceeding three months per a six-month period, a non-EU country national must"
I would encourage the OP to mail Migri. They already handle staying for tourism (allowed) after the permit expires in their FAQ (question 14):
http://www.migri.fi/services/faq/residence_permits
Hopefully they will eventually update the OP's case there.
