Entrance Exam for Game Design

Post by ayjay » Wed Nov 19, 2014 11:38 am

Hello everybody!
I want to study Game Design bachelor degree in Finland. Currently I study in Istanbul.
But I don't have any background about Game Design..I can use some animation softwares but not in a professionally way that's why I want to study it to improve myself and my skills.
But on the website of university (KYAM) it says there will be entrance exam

"For the Game Design there is no pre reading material for the entrance exams. The entrance exam of the Game Design programme consists of game design tasks that involve presenting ones ideas verbally and visually. The evaluation criteria vary from task to task but involve mostly some of the following: ideation skills, creativity and imagination, logical thinking, presentation skills (ability to communicate and illustrate ones ideas both verbally and visually), storytelling skills, drawing skills and quality of work."

It feels like I need a portfolio but the thing is I don't have that much knowledge to create a portfolio on game design.
Do you have any idea what what I should do? Starting some courses to get knowledge for creating a portfolio? I don't wanna spend money on courses and I really want to study in this program me. I'm lost :( :(

Hi,
There is some basic information about Game Design in Kyamk which I have from my friend (I am IB student in Kyamk so I do not know much about Game Design =(( )
The year of 2014, Kyamk took 18 student with score of 73.
The duration of the entrance exam is 6 hours, you have lunch break for 30 mins. There are four main parts:
1. Motivation letter: You can prepare it beforehand if you like :D It will concerns about why you choose Game Design, your goals, ect.
2. Gameplay: Read stories to have inspiration to write a game (game story, gameplay, goal, challenge, collectable items,...)
3. Character design: Draw main character, build background story for this character.
4. Game environment and game mechanic: Draw the environment of the game and explain ,....
This is my friend experience on entrance exam last year.
Hope it is useful for you.
