Rovaniemi: Any Cheaper way to Transport Car?

Post by S.richard » Sat Aug 23, 2014 9:28 pm

Hi,
I have to go to Rovaniemi. So I am interested to transport my car there from Helsinki ,in the mid of September. I have to go by air. The VR (Finish Rail) told in the online chat massage that it would cost around 160 to transport only the car. I am not sure whether I understood correctly or if there is any cheaper alternative. This price seems too high to me. Does anybody have any experience or suggestion in this regard?

Regards,
Richard

800km 7l/100km means 56 litres of fuel and average price 1,64 means it costs about 92e on fuel. Not to count 10 hours of labour.
You may get someone who wants to go in rovaniemi to drive free but i wouldnt count on that.

So if you dont get someone doing driving free then no there is no cheaper way.

VR website says RETURN ticket Hki-Rov-Hki for 1 passenger and 1 car is 215€.

You are just trying to ship the car without using the train yourself and so they are just applying freight rates.

That seems to be the rate for the return part of the trip, but if you want to travel both ways you need to pay also for the trip to Rovaniemi.

Are u sure it is for both way? I found this kind of rate just for one way i.e., Helsinki to Rovanime or vice versa. I checked it in car package tab of their online shop.

Just looked again - there's reference to Car Train Package on a side bar - /what I saw)

Had quite a lot of trouble getting program to accept data (via Google Chrrome which is often incompatible with forms) - so you are probably right.

In any case I think VR has different calculation systems for passenger/car and just freight for car.

As a conclusion though - I should think 160€ reasonable for getting the car there.

Back in the day I had a Datsun 1200 blow up in Salla - it cost about 30€ to get it back to Hki via VR - but hej - that was last century. :)

That seems like a pretty reasonable price to me. You should have other options besides air freight though. My understanding is that it's the most expensive option. If you need a recommendation, A1AutoTransport regularly ships in the area and I know they offer container shipping and overland transport for most types of vehicles. Not sure what sort of price range you're looking for, but it's not a service you really want to skimp on.
