Hi Forum,
I have seen canned moose and reindeer meat in the grocery stores. How to eat these? Any recipes to share? Do they taste good?
Most importantly, I am totally against metal canning. So, Are there other ways/products to buy moose and reindeer meat frozen or fresh? Please, Share sites with me !
Thanks !

Yeah, canned meat is a wee bit dodgy. Moose you can find very "seasonal" on the meat counters, though usually its sold as mince with pork (as otherwise its so dry). As such it can be used for whatever you'd use mince for from meatballs to burgers. Reindeer you can buy frozen, vacuum packed full carcasses delivered even. Was it deliporo or something like that.

Check out your local kauppahalli for meat sections, and larger supermarkets may have those, too. Your best bet for better meat than the canned who-knows-what-it-is that is soaked in horrible liquids, is to check out any shop's/supermarket's frozen sections. Even smaller K-supermarkets and the odd Valintatalo or Siwa often have frozen reindeer, at least.
Recipes are easily available online, just search. Reindeer is easy to fry up though: often frozen reindeer meat comes in thin slices that are packed together into a stack - just put on a pan (with butter), let fry for a while until brown on the side that touches the pan and so a slice of meat comes off the frozen stack, turn the pack/stack on the opposite side to fry and loosen up the thin meat slices on that side. Repeat. Add salt and black pepper + water in the pan, let simmer for some minutes. You can add onion, mushroom, etc. to your taste. Traditionally served with mashed potatoes or crumbled eggs.
Traditional way of the Lappish people - no cream sauces like you may see in restaurants.

If you are in Helsinki, you could try Chef Wotkins' store in Sörnainen (near Kalasatama metro station) - they sell fresh and frozen Finnish venison/game. It is very expensive though, more expensive than prime cuts of beef. They are very helpful and will tell you how to cook it.

And the butcher (Reinin liha) in Hakaniemi market also sells some fresh venison and game.

How is that vacuum-packed meat?
