Cancelled Business Trip - Wage

Post by burak25 » Wed Feb 18, 2015 8:46 am

Hi,

I am paid hourly and I work like an outside adviser (with proper, ordinary work contract of course). We were suppose to have a foreigner group coming to Finland for business related visit. I arranged my Friday - Saturday moved everything out those dates for this. On last minute this visit was cancelled (on Thursday afternoon...).

My question is should I include those dates as worked on my work sheet or not?

I did nothing related to work on those dates but on the other hand I spent previous 2 weeks to arrange those dates for this visit.

PS: My boss (who my salary) had nothing to do with cancellation and he also wasted 2000 EUR for reservations.
Never been in this situation before, I am just curious what is the general application in this case?

As an independent advisor you should have included this kind of inefficient use of time in your hourly rates.
(so successful projects gives you some extra for this kind of things)
Or you could have offered a fixed price for the work, not depending on the actual time spend.

Off course other costs you made in relation to this visit you can claim (if you normally also declare those kind of costs).

Outside adviser and ordinary work contract are two conflicting things. If you have an ordinary work contract, then you are a company internal employee. To answer your question one should first consult your work contract and collective bargaining agreement if applied. If you have a consulting agreement (not a "työsopimus") then you consult the terms of the agreement. They will probably be silent on the matter so you would negotiate with the other party.

I guess the simple answers is YES, add compensation details. Its normal for business.

For me being your "boss" for example . I would accept an "oncall" salary for the days you already allocated as work days .
Friday and Saturday are "on call", salary negotiable to circumstances.
But to claim an oncall salary you need to be oncall.

It depends how much of a work ethic statement you want to show.

Thank for replies.
I work from home, and send hours I work to my boss. So I don't have monthly wage and I believe contract is for part time (since I am on student permit).
My ethical problem is, I did nothing work related those days, but still I postponed or cancelled everything I had. I think my boss and I can reach a mutual ground.

So you get paid 20% of your normal hr rate for those full hrs you booked. Its a small price to pay for a company who potentially gets all the benefits.
