Best olive oil?
Best olive oil?
As you know more then 70% of extra virgin olive oils are fake. Some brands that i used to buy are not available in Finland (at least i didnt find them). I dont care much for money when buying healthy food. Can somebody tell me which one is best one in Finland and why you prefer that one? Thank you a lot

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Re: Best olive oil?
There's no "best", there's so much variation in taste that none would rank among the top ones for all (common) uses, let alone different people's preferences. Also, I'm sure there's also variation in quality and taste in most brands over time. Some swear by Knossos. IIRC it was Rainbow (or another el cheapo brand) that won a blind tasting test some years back. Personally I like a mild taste in olive oil - not much of a fan of olives, either - just about the only use for myself is in salads and pizza dough. The one I used to use is no longer being sold by my nearby store, can't remember the name, there were different variations of it for different uses. Anyway, knowing my preferences, I wouldn't pay much extra over something that I've deemed "good enough".

Lidl's EVOO pretty good - and decent price - about 4.80 for 750ml. It has won taste tests.
Be sure to look for 100% EVOO - many types are hybrids or 100% NOT EVOO!
But here's something to think about - EVOO said by some not healthy for frying - (high temp) - so I found Xtra 100% NOT EVOO for frying.

As a Mediterranean who uses olive oil for most of the time, I can say EVOO is very very good for a market brand. Also all olive oils are bad for frying. Do not use them for frying.harryc wrote:Lidl's EVOO pretty good - and decent price - about 4.80 for 750ml. It has won taste tests.

Re: Best olive oil?
The issue here is that the smoke point of EVOO is much lower than the non.virgin OO - and the transformation into nasty radicals is related to temperature - the higher the worse.
One interesting aspect is that when this started to be suspect some Italian villages were looked at in depth where they had used nothing but EVOO - for frying and whatever.
So while all oils otherwise are going to produce 'bad things' when used for frying - one should use oils with the highest smoke points.

btw Burak . what is this brand you think to be very, very good?
