Is it worth paying 100 euros extra for 1 year more warranty

Post by biz_it » Fri Mar 06, 2015 12:34 pm

Hi,

I am thinking about buying a multimedia laptop and have found Asus G551JM to be a reasonable one. However there is a question. verkkokauppa sells this laptop for 1100 euros and three years warranty. Another vendor sells it for 1000 euros (100% same specs) and two years warranty

My question: Is it worth paying 100 euros more for one year extra warranty?

Generally no. I remember seeing some research on these "extra warranty" policies some years ago. The summary was that companies make more money from selling you extra warranty than from selling the actual product. Stick the 100e under your mattress. If you laptop breaks, use the 100e to subsidise the repair. If it doesn't break during the year, then go enjoy your 100e :D
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I cannot give you advice in your situation, but if I faced a similar choice I'd go with the 2 year warranty for 100 cheaper.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Definitely no. It is doubtful that the life span of a laptop goes over 2 years of active use. From my personal experience complicated machinery breaks quite quickly if it is faulty , while simpler things ( refrigerators, dishwashers etc) start to break later in their life.
What do you want from me?????

When a student in the UK I worked for Dixons (now owners of Gigantti chain here) and this is certainly true, we'd be told to push the sales of these warranties for exactly this reason.
With a laptop if it lasts two weeks then it's going to last several years, most of the faults will be found early on in life, probably in the first 10 minutes of opening the box. In the third year of ownership some of the faults might not be covered by warranty anyway and the company will weasel out of paying saying it's normal "wear and tear" (key legends wearing off, hinge a bit loose, outer covering wearing smooth).
