Can I apply for student allowances?

Post by Lavender » Thu Mar 19, 2015 6:14 pm

Hi!
First, sorry if my question has already been answered somewhere on the forum. I also checked the Kela webpage, I just want to make sure I understood it right. I’m currently in Finland as an exchange student on Erasmus programme and I’d like to continue to Master studies in Finland, possibly starting in September. Would I be able to get student allowances, if my reason to stay are family ties? My partner is Finnish and we’ve been cohabitating for 2 years (one year in my home country - EU, and one year in Finland). Thanks for answer.

You can apply and if you have a RP as a family member you're entitled to it.
But do realize that you first need the RP before you can apply and get the money.

She doesn't need an RP. She's an EUer cohabitating with a Finn.

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Has to be registered. Now the problem here is the orgasmus. Shes "in the computer" as a student/temporary. She needs to be in the computer as family/permanent. Otherwise for the handout the computer says no.

Yes you will get it, you just need to have proof of at least 6 months of cohabitation (proof of rent, etc), and then the certain amount of credits each month.

I have a feeling it was 2 years. Also, do you know if the documents have to be in Finnish (or at least English), and if so, does it have to be officially translated?

Well i'm a full time degree student here in Finland, when I applied for my Kela benefits, they told me we had to have proof of cohabitating for at least 6 months. With my application I just sent a copy of my rental agreement that I have with my girlfriend along with copies of monthly rent bills. I think you would have to have the cohabitation for 6 continuous months in Finland before you apply though.

Yeah, I guess you were registered as a permanent resident?
