How much does a Bicycle cost in Finland?

Post by saleciahost » Sat Apr 25, 2015 5:31 am

We are a family of 5 planning a move from the USA to Helsinki and as we decide what to bring / ship etc. We are wondering if it is worth bringing our 5 decent bikes or can we buy them in Helsinki for a good price. We are happy to buy second hand. It will cost aprox $100-150 per bike to fly them over.

Jesus! That shipping price is low! If your bikes are decent, then ship them.
A good second hand bike will cost you something like 100-$150, so it's a lot better to use the bike you're already used to.
A new bike decent and suitable for the city) will be anywhere between 400 and $1000.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Define decent? (Decent is relative . . .) I'd say if your ride is worth more than about $500 then shipping it might make sense. This opinion is worth everything you've paid for it.

I shipped my bikes in the container from the US with all my other worldly possessions. They came through ok. And I use them extensively here. I would suggest getting them tuned up before you come on over.

Everything here is more expensive than in the states. Well, almost everything. Some of it is taxation, some of it is a somewhat closed retail market. Luckily there are a lot of bikers and many bike stores, so bike prices tend to be relatively less inflated than other items.

To get an idea of pricing here is a link to a list of local bike shops:

Enjoy your move.
