I got accepted to Tampere University of Technology (TUT), but my first choice was University of Helsinki and was rejected.
Does anyone know about the quality of education at TUT compared to U of Helsinki? How strong is the degree (master's), especially for someone who wants to do a Phd later on. My major is computer science btw.
One more question: should I appeal the rejection from U of Helsinki? Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation? I really want to go there because of the quality of the degree and because TUT's research areas are not what I really want to work on... They rejected me because of my grades, but I have a strong letter of recommendation and I can say with confidence that I completed their preliminary assignment flawlessly.
Thanks
Tampere University of Technology - quality?
Re: Tampere University of Technology - quality?
University of Helsinki has longer history compared to TUT, and that's pretty much it. TUT has grown to become a very well-respected educational institution in Finland and Europe. They have very high standards and usually only accept the best of applicants.
The "strength of a degree" is a concept that almost doesn't exist in Finland. All universities' degrees are treated equally in terms of eligibility for further education or employment. The deciding factor is your area of research, your achievements, and your grades (in some areas of academia).
Another thing is that they have very deep connection to the industry, which means you'll get a lot real-life research experience, and not just bullsh*t research like the research usually done in, for example, University of Vaasa.
Honestly, if it's your field, go for it. Once you graduate, you'll have options to move to other places to pursue more specialized areas of research.

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Hmmm, ok I feel a little better about it now. Thanks.

TUT and Tampere is a heaven for IT related people. Just check amount of job ads related to IT compared to rest and you will see.
and yes on paper Aalto and Helsinki Universities are much better than TUT but they are much older too. Doesn't mean a thing.

If you were rejected because there were more applicants with higher grades an appeal will not be successful. One more question: should I appeal the rejection from U of Helsinki? Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?
