child wants to eat before payment?
Re: child wants to eat before payment?
Might be illegal, might be not. For me, I don't think it is wrong as long as you pay. Anyway there are CCTVs to prove that you are paying for the stuff your kid ate. But as you said, you don't even want to deal with the .01% conflict it would raise in this situation. And the situation already raised some eyebrows in this forum. You were even judged on how you raise your kid. Soooooo?
As for those judging you about your kid, I believe in the saying "my kid, my rules".

I see no problem with packaged stuff, but those that have to be weighed... I wouldn't do it.

Yes, This is all I would have wanted to know. If this is not a good practice, I will be careful. This is exactly the reason I raised it on this forum. Would not want to do something that is considered malpractice.kitikeyt wrote:Might be illegal, might be not. For me, I don't think it is wrong as long as you pay. No one tells me when I have to tell my kid NO or YES. All I wanted to know was whether stores could object to this kind of practice. I have seen people giving food to babies while they had not checked out and I was kind of doubtful so wanted to be clear.

Thank You, This is all I would have wanted to know and some kind people above gave the precise information that I needed. If this is not a good practice, I will be careful. If I give you a lollypop will you stop complaining about being judged?
Look, I'm sorry if you feel that way. As far as I can tell neither my posts nor others' I read had a judgemental tone, at least not about your parental abilities, so this may well be due to the filters through which you are reading these comments. It doesn't mean that your feelings are any less valid or legitimate. Most of us have raised children and god knows we haven't always had the strength to do the right thing, or to listen to people who seem to know it better - regardless of the validity of their concerns.
I have, however, been wrong in the past, so feel free to point out how did we judge you. I may not agree with the feedback, but I sure appreciate the effort.

Parents are universally known to display an explosive amount of insecurities whenever faced with any criticism regarding their offspring. I have met ZERO parents who handled criticism well.
See all those people who criticized the OP? Every single one of them (including myself) will behave in a similar fashion once in the same situation. We're so irrational when it comes to little **** we bring to this world.
So, in a way, I do understand OP's point of view.

Yes, and I believe this attitude encourages the signs "no children under 12, well behaved dogs welcome" that I have seen outside restaurants in England. A sign I quite agree with btw.kitikeyt wrote:As for those judging you about your kid, I believe in the saying "my kid, my rules".

Yup. Times I have been thanked when I've told kid to stop banging my leg with trolley: 0. Times I've been told to mind my own business (my kids, my rules, you know) when I've told kid to stop banging my leg with trolley: way over zero. My favourite time to shop is now whenever I suspect that there is minimal amount of white trash with kids on the loose.riku2 wrote:Yes, and I believe this attitude encourages the signs "no children under 12, well behaved dogs welcome" that I have seen outside restaurants in England. Basically, you need to "pass the cashier line" without paying for it to be a "pinching". In a big supermarket you might get a detective on your tail if its a slow day.... Been there, done that... its considered more or less ok with small toddlers, but say if you start to make a sandwich and drink beer, then you'll get escorted out. As long as you provide the wrappets and pay its not "illegal". Frowns maybe,as you can seepeople got opinions.

It's not like she was teaching or encouraging the kid to steal. And besides the OP did not ask for our opinion about how she's raising her child. All I'm saying is that parents could really be sensitive when someone criticize their parenting style.
PS: Not all kids under 12 behave worse than a disciplined dog and some adults are worse than dogs (especially those adults who just came back from the midnight cruise from Estonia)

Re: child wants to eat before payment?
I wouldn't do it. It just doesn't seem honest to me.
Have snacks on hand and feed your child something just before you go shopping, if you are taking them with. I never had a hunger melt down in a shop with my child, by giving a snack beforehand. It never crossed my mind to think about feeding my child with food I hadn't paid for. Just my opinion. Not telling you off.

Re: child wants to eat before payment?
i do that regularly myself.
it sucks being hungry when you go shopping; i tend to buy the wrong things
usually it's other children that i overhear speaking to their mothers: "look, he's eating! he didn't pay! that's forbidden!"
i think it is important to keep the plastic bag with the correct price tag visibly in your cart when doing that, or the milk carton visibly in the child's hand.
at least in germany, there's laws that say that certain types of theft can't be prosecuted. like eating a banana in the market. because eating is a basic need.
i never got in trouble with this, because my honest intentions are clearly visible, and i think that's legally binding.
btw, you should really wash those apples before giving them to your kid. so much poison & dirt on them.
oh and biz_it, your description of your child's behaviour in post #1 is so detailed and vivid, why do you subsequently complain about people answering to that part of the post, too.

Hopefully this doesn't happen too often! http://moonbattery.com/?p=58401
Re: child wants to eat before payment?
Was the lengthy explanation some attempted justification of eating things before payment, since if it was illegal for adults then the OP hoped it would be ok for hungry children throwing a tantrum?tuttu wrote:oh and biz_it, your description of your child's behaviour in post #1 is so detailed and vivid, why do you subsequently complain about people answering to that part of the post, too.
